Is it possible to build a laptop from scratch? If possible, would it be any cheaper to build it than to buy it brand new like a desktop?

look at ASUS barebooks. i read an article about building one, but it is extremely complicated and fragile so i would build a few desktops first. thats what i did.

totally from scratch yes if your good with plastic molding and a dremel tool. not entirely form scratch, barebone kits try newegg.com they should have some. usually you can get a case and a mobo. want more basic? i know if you look aroun you can find a pure case, then find a mobo etc individualy. only problem i have ever had is the big question, "will this fit?" some barebones dont come with keyboards though so watch what you look at buying. hope this was usefull

I dunno, according to Maximum PC, it's not that hard to build a laptop, they had a whole article about it. You just have to find all the parts, it's also not as fragile as you might think.

yeah.....thats the artical i was reading........i love that mag. they aren't forced by Microsoft to give great reviews about Vista. like computer shopper and PC Mag

It would take you far longer and maybe more expensive due to the custom fitting of everything in the small amount of space available. You probably would end up throwing it against a wall being frustrated trying to fit each piece in and still not seeing half way decent results. You would have to be very machine tool capable as well as a good planner to first create the layout for everything to go in just right. Custom fit this, precision fit something else, and the list goes on.

The tooling as well as the experience would be a plus to see any working results. This is companies like Dell make the big bucks. They pay people to design the models. Others get paid for the tooling and setup, and the last is the assembly workers. You pay the price for that when buying a prebuilt. Custom building a laptop is far more involved then modding a desktop 4sure!

I looked at newegg for someone else, and they didn't have laptop barebones. Doubt they'll have them now :)

speaking of, does anyone noe where i can find just a new laptop CASE? my laptop has a huge crack in it and its lights are all crosseyed

buy a laptop, they're only 500-700$ more then what it'll cost u to build.. i rather pay that extra with the 1 year warrently, then worry about fitting and stuff.

Asus amd other places carry custom ordered laptops. Alienware is usually one place to stay away however due to phenomenal prices seen for custom gaming rigs. Asus usually carries the quality stuff to consider.

Thanks, but I'm not really even actually concidering building a laptop. I'm just saying that if I ever wanted to, if it was even plosible.

Ah, well to me, the first time I looked at your first post- You implied you were going to build a laptop, but now looking at it, I can see you just wanted to know if you could. You should try though, or someone should. I would like to see how it turns out :)

That will take someone with experience in modding cases to even consider. In order to custom design your own you would machine tool experience as well as being familiar with the common materials used in construction like the amount of plastics as well as metal. The individual parts by themselves as far as keys for a keyboard, touch pad, battery and lcd display alike are all things to have to weighed in. You would need to order parts made for?
