Which Graphics Card?

Hey guys

Im in the process of building my new computer but cant decide which graphics card to go with the following motherboard and cpu (will be overclocked)

intel core 2 duo e6400
asus p5n32-e sli

thinking of either a ati radeon x1950 pro with 512mb or the nvidia geforce 7900 gs. max price im willing to go to is £150 and also would like something thats gonna be happy with overclocking.

Any help would be great

thanks

X1950pro beats 7900GS at stock. However if you voltmod 7900GS then you can overclock it to crazy speeds

ok cheers, i will have a think. Probably end up with 7900 gs as it is cheaper and the tests ive seen it was nearly 7fps quicker so.

Get the 7900GT, you voltmod a 7900GT, you will be rewarded handsomely. I have a 7900GT and its running at 620Mhz core and 1.86Ghz ram stock is 450/1400.

yeh but the 7900 gt is a bit expensive for me, especially put up to the 7900 gs . How much performance difference do you reckon? cant be that much can it?

I don't really know, I know the difference on paper. The 7900GS uses the same G71 core as the 7900GT and the 7900GTX. However, 4 pipelines and one vertex processor has been disabled, and they are laser-cut, which means its really difficult to unlock. With my clocks maxed out I get 6250 in 3dmark 06, 11500 in 3dmkar 05, and 21952 in 3dmark 03.

ok, there pretty good results. just found another ati card, x1900xt 256mb but cant find any benchmarks using this card, anybody had any experience with it?

1950 pro doesnt overclock bad..

im getting nearly 7900 gtx clocks. 635/1600 opposed to 650/1600

with the asus stock cooler on 60%, which is as loud as an 80mm at 1600 rpm

not bad :D

id go for the 7900 gt and voltmod it.

can u not voltmod the gs? are they not identicle cards?

yeh i do believe you can voltmod the gs, i think im gonna go with 7900 gs for now as it is farely cheap and quick enough i hope, lol

maybe upgrade in a few months

thanks for all the advice

1950 pro doesnt overclock bad..

Are you saying they are bad for overclocking or not? One of my friends have a X1950pro and I have a 7900GT and I always rub it in the fact that I paid less for my 7900GT and yet it still outperformed the ATi in both stock and overclocked speeds. The overclocking headroom on ATi cards in general is less than their nvidia counterparts, and that is true for all the cards that I have benchmarked.

id go with the ATI card. they tend to last a bit longer... whereas nvidia doesn't always integrate all the newer technologies into their cards (eg. FSAA + HDR for 7 series) i was really t.o.ed when i found out my $465 7900gtx couldn't do that... and sold it with my X2 rig.
