What should I get?

OK guys, well I would like to start with my custom PC. Someone has told me to just get a barebone kit, and just buy the other stuff to go with it. Well, could you guys recommend some good, cheap, and reliable barebone kits as well as what kind of parts should go with them? I am not going to be doing any hardcore gaming, maybe a little CS, but not much at all. Thanks

Barbones kits are mainly for upgrading an existing computer, not starting from scratch. They also generally don't have the most up-to-date parts, and when they do, it's usually just cheaper to buy the parts separately.

Ah, so it would be best to just buy all the parts separately? I was just wondering because this would be my first build. It would be a good learning experience.

Yeah, buying everything separately is probably your best option. If you're from the US, Newegg is one of the cheapest places to buy computer parts from, and they have fabulous customer service.

Ah, well I will probably need some help on which parts to get because I am not sure what all works together, etc.

For your needs, you're probably best waiting until April...Nvidia will be releasing DX10 cards at a very reasonably price ($180 for th 8600 Ultra), and Intel will be refreshing the C2D lineup and cutting prices. This all happens late April...Intel cuts prices on April 22, and I think Nvidia releases the 8600 a few days before then. Otherwise, you'll either need to decide between a DX9 card (which isn't optimal if you plan on playing the latest games/ future games), or shelling out a fair amount of money for an 8800GTS (which is DX10).

Well, I would rather just wait until April, I won't be doing much gaming, but I may play SOME CS.

What type of parts should I look into getting for right now? That will not be updated or anything anytime soon.

Also, I would want everything XP compatible

If you want to wait to April then go with a Core 2 Duo, they are being updated and getting 4mb caches all down the 6xxx list(I think). The prices are dropping, I guess no gaming then no OC'ing. Definitely get a SATA2 HD, the one in my sig is awesome. What is CS, what is your budget for this?

CS is a game from steam I believe www.steampowered.com . I doubt I will even play it though, so mine as well say no gaming. Well, yes, I planned on getting a core 2 duo, and about the price, I am looking for the cheapest I can get for what I need. I probably wouldn't go over $1,000. I don't plan on buying all the parts at once, just little by little. I plan on selling this other PC I have to get some of the money I will need to use. Right now, all I have is around $40, anything I could get right now for that cheap? Heh

Well if you're not going to game at all (or very little) it hardly pays for you to get a C2D, a nice AMD will do you just fine. As for the other parts, what will you need? Do you have a lot of videos and music? Do you just surf the web on your computer?

Well, yeah I don't think the AMD would work well. I just program in different languages such as VB, JAVA, and I also make graphics sometimes using Photoshop. I think I would probably need a good amount of RAM to run these things.

How would the AMD not work well? Until the C2D came out, AMD had the better processors. It won't make a difference when programming what processor you use, and AMD's dual core CPU's are cheaper than the C2D's and will do everything you need it to just fine. A C2D for your needs is just overkill.

And yes, you will need a good amount of RAM...2gb should be fine.

Omg, I'm sorry...I was typing something, then deleted some of it and kept typing and it came out I don't think it would work well...Sorry...I meant to say I do think it could work well. So, I should get an AMD dual core?

The 3800 X2 will probably work well for your needs. Try tigerdirect.com, though. Their prices were a little lower last time I checked. You could also spend a bit more and go for something more around a 4600+.
