eSATA

Does eSATA differ from SATA (beside that it's external) ?

If a mobo doesn't have eSATA, can I just add a connector (at rear or front panel) to one of the mobo's SATA then treat it like an eSATA ?

Thanks.

I dont think there is any difference, have you tried just running the SATA cable from your hd to mobo. I maybe be wrong but Externals come w/ there own power cord. So all you need is the SATA cable running from the HD to MOBO. I am prob. off but the best answer I could come up w/.

Yes, external HDD casing come with its own power line. And it also have SATA port and a connector panel to be installed on the case of computer (just a connector, not a card). So I think it should be able to work like an eSATA.

I can't test it now because my current mobo doesn't have sata. I plan to purchase a new mobo so I want to be sure whether I need to include eSATA feature for this new mobo selection. Mobos those have eSATA are usually more expensive.

Yeah, I would probably get one just incase. But than again, tomorrow they will have a new technology, that requires a new mobo. So really if you must have it I say go w/ the ESATA Mobo.

There is a difference between the two. E-Sata has a different connection. You would need to get a cable that goes from E-Sata to SATA, such as this cable.... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812203028

And as far as adding Esata to a non E-sata motherboard, you can't do it. With E-Sata you can supposedly hot swap SATA drives without shutting the system down.

Yes, it is different.

I've found articles about this :

Thanks.
