i need to buy an operating system, for sure. my old windows xp is fried and i cant fix it. i dont have a cd-key either. i wanted to know if linux is as good as windows, and does it have as many features. i play LOADS of games and i have a good system too. are all my components supported?

ATI radeon x800GTO
athlon64 [email protected]
1.25 gbOCZ ram
two DVD reader and writer

also, does linux feature things like desktops, can i condigure it to act like windows, can i right click on an icon and it display my options, like properties, send to, open with, that kind of stuff. do i have a taskbar at the bottom like windows, can i put icons on my desktop like windows, will it be able to find drivers like windows, i want to know EVERYTHING ABOUT LINUX

Get windows xp , linux doesn't a lot of support for most of the games and even if you could play some the "emulators" will have bugs, etc

i can deal with bugs, i guess. hey do you know of any programs i can download that will repair my windows xp? like one that i couls burn to a cd, then boot from and it will repair? im really desperate, my computer has been broken for almost six months now and i want it back rly bad

and whats up with all the names? freespire, ubuntu, linux, xsandros, suse, and why do all of the 'cube' videos on youtube all say 'nvidia' in the title? will my X800 not work cuz its ATI???

EDIT: and also, if my vid card will work, if i just straight download ubuntu from the website, what will i have to do to use the cube?

First of all you are insulting linux. Most people are fed up with windows cos of problems and somehow that problem is financial..lol Names are just name..why is vista called vista ? EH ?. no THAT CUBE is not all about nvidia it supports ATI and you have to go to the respective forums of your distro for more info. Thats what they are for, and that cube goes by the name of Beryl. for more info go here

You say that you play loads of games, in which case forget Linux.

The games you play are designed for Windows, very few Windows games will run under Linux.

simon's right. If you want games its windows 4 you, but if you just want to try out linux i suggest you start with ubuntu

yes i think i'll try linux then when i get the money to ill buy windows and set up a dual boot-up with windows... that sounds like the way to go, and thanks for tipping me off to beryl i really dont know much about linux, but im liking it more and more.

and NO i wasnt trying to insult linux cuz its cheap, but that is a true highlight, and i wont pass that opportunity up. i have spent almost $1,000 on my computer, and i want it to run, no matter the operating system.

also, arent there emulators that i might be able to use for gaming? i have heard that i can...

lastly, i already ordered a CD from a online store and im really looking forward to getting it.

thx for your help, matt

There aren't actually any Windows emulators for Linux.

The main program that MIGHT allow you to use some Windows software is called WINE (Wine Is Not an Emulator)

Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix.

You will no doubt hear of Cedega as well, this is basically WINE with a graphical front end and easier to use.

The number of games that will run under this software is very limited, chances are you might not get any of your existing games to run at all.

I suggest you look into what Games run natively and what games can be run under the likes of WINE / Cedega / CrossOver.

WINE

Cedega

Crossover

I can tell you now that Unreal Tournament 2004, Quake 4 and Doom III will run natively so if you play any of those you are ok.

doom III? quake IIII? i absolutely LOVE those games. they will run native on linux? that suprises me. is unreal tournament '04 any good? never played it before, so im not really sure...

hmm i looked into wine, crossover and cedega, but it looks as if wine can be my only choice. cedega says that it requires an n-vidia video card, (i have ATI) and the crossover charge a LOT of money, even tho it does look to be the best choice... i will try out wine and hope for the best that some of my 50+ games will work...

also, i would like to know some prime places where i can read into all this stuff im hearing about, fedora project, red-hat, and the like. google has been giving me conflicting information, so im curious now

you cannot game worth a damn on linux. period. I know people will argue with me but it's a hassle getting it going. Windows is the best for gaming hands down.

If you want to play Steam related games or say BF2142 or BF2 stay away from linux. And I like linux.

well, im only doing this as a temporary thing to have my computer running at the very least. as long as i can play quake and doom i'l be ok till i can buy windows
