RAID making HDD prices go lower

Do you think RAID is will make this price go lower? Can't I just take two 250Gb 16Mb HDD drives and RAID 0 them together and get twice the speed without the price?

don't even mention space is a problem

What do you think about this?

I'm not sure what you're asking. A technology (RAID) causing HD prices to go down? And no you won't get twice the speed. Nowhere NEAR twice the speed. And yes like you said you'd only get 250GB space.

He's saying he would take two 250gb harddrives, and put them in RAID 0 to make one 500gb logical drive. There are speed advantages to RAID, though I'm not sure if it's twice the speed as a non-RAIDed device.

With the increase in performance you also double the likelihood of HD failure since one drive goes all data is lost. The performance is not twice as fast so why take twice the risk? I have looked into and recently decided to just get an additional drive and not put them in RAID0 them.

You might want to research a bit. Making two 250GB drives into a RAID 0 setup gives you half the space. Or the space of the smallest drive.

No...you're thinking of RAID 1. RAID 0 takes two physical harddrives, and makes it into one logical drive, adding the space of the two. I would know, I'm doing it right now. I have 2 250gb harddrives set up in RAID 0, and it shows up in Windows (And Linux, for that matter) as one 500gb drive. Check out http://www.computerforum.com/10889-raid-101-a.html for more info.

i think what hes saying, is that its cheaper to get two(2) 250 gig HDs and put them in a RAID arrary, rather than buy just one 500 gig HD.

Gah, yes I was just thinking of 2x(space of smallest drive.) I guess.
