what is the highest cpu for a socket 754 mobo available? i have found a athlon64 3700, but should i just go AM2 instead as 754's seem to be like flogging a dead horse really.

if i were you i would probaly invest in a whole new motherboard aswell, i previously had the Athlon 3800+ with a socket 939 mobo, if you are on a budget then by all means just keep looking for a suitable CPU.. i think ASUS have some very good motherboards for the price you pay. on newegg - ASUS M2N Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 430 MCP ATX AMD Motherboard - OEM .

yes that would be well within my budget
just got to convince the other half to let me upgrade AGAIN , this will be the third mobo/cpu upgrade in the last 12 months

AMD fan through and through
i would rather stay with AMD for several reasons, one being they seem to run cooler than intel although intel do seem to be more heat tolerant.
