Need Reccomendations for a New Drive

Alright so my drive just died. It was a TSSTcorp CDRW/DVD drive. I heard a rumor that these were bought as refurbished drives from Samsung and then placed as "new" drives in Inspiron computers (such as the one you see in my signature). Can anyone confirm this?

The fact remains however that I will need a new drive for my laptop (the one in my signature). I would like to be able to burn CD-R's/RW's and be able to play DvD's. The cheaper the better, however, please keep in mind that I want it to last me a while.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I don't think they would be doing that, if they were, then there will be a HUGE market backlash. Who wants to buy a NEW laptop only to find that it has a second hand drive. Yeah that will go down well.... :P:P:P

I really wouldn't thinks so either. But if it were the case, it wasn't really obvious, I found it on the Dell suppport forums, while trouble shooting.

Thanks for the help guys.

Hmm, I'm kind of on the fence, with them. If I hear anything good about them then I'll take it, otherwise I'll probablly just go with newegg. Thanks for the help.

hey guys. i know this is a bit off topic. but i was reading about the 'refurbished' drives that may or may not be sold as new. it doesnt seem likely, but you never can tell.
(now for the off topic part) a couple of months ago my xbox360 broke and i had to send it to ms for repair. it was maybe 3 months old, and under full warranty from microsoft for 12 months. so anyway, i sent it in and got it back. but, the console they sent back to me is not the same one i bought. serial number is different. it looks brand new though. so i asked on xbox.com if they sent me a new or refurb, and how could i tell? the guys on there said that if there was a sticker on the disc tray, it was new. no sticker, then its refurbished. well, mine had no sticker..so its a refurb. i have a problem with this. i paid full price for a brand new console. i know it was broken and needed fixed, so it would essentually be a refub anyway once i got it back. but the fact that they sent me someone elses broken console really didnt set well with me. and of course, they never mentioned that i would be getting a refub...they were supposed to fix mine.

so the point is that if microsoft tries to give you a refub w/o telling you, then i wouldnt put it past any other company. whatever saves them money. and dell, well they seem to be just as greedy as M$. i called dell's "customer service". which is supposed to be really good from what had heard. but then the guy told me that i had to pay for an "on-call account" if i needed customer service help. UpnP wouldnt work. come to find out that the problem was with the xp home that the computer came with..had to re-install windows. no thanks to dell's customer support.

I have heard that some branded pc manufacturer was selling "refurbished" drives as New ones before. The name has escaped me. :(
