Installing New Motherboard

Hi,

I currently have an ASUS A8N5X motherboard and am replacing it with another brand. Since my hard drive currently has the files and the configuration of the ASUS on it already, what are the steps to follow when replacing with a totally new one?

Install new one and then delete ASUS files?
etc? etc?

Thanks!

It's simple, if you are using Windows XP and changing mobo - you will have to reinstall the OS. No matter what you think, that's the outcome of changing mobo's.

Windows requires a fresh installation. So, make sure you back up everything important to you.

Before you shut down the last time uninstall (all) your motherboard drivers, after you install the new board boot into safe mode the first time and let XP install its drivers. Boot into regular mode and update all your drivers. If it doesnt want to boot, boot to your XP cd and let it load the set up files, dont pick the first repair option, let it go on to the page where it shows your harddrive and ask weither you want to install or repair, pick repair.
But a clean install is the best way!

How similar are the boards? If they are quite close(say an nForce4 and nForce4 SLI) you'd probably do just fine leaving it alone... When I did a mobo swap from my Abit to an Epox(similar chipsets) windows still worked just fine.

Original: ASUS A8N5X

Replacement: WinFast NF4SK8AA

I keep seeing warnings on google searches for "replace motherboard" that I should not choose repair on windows CD. I am content to just do a full reinstall of windows, a fresh install, as I have everything backed up.

----Can I simply just do it normally, as in CD boot, partition HD and go from there? Or is there more "theory" as to why this should "not be done"

Thanks for any insight,
