I was recently banned form a VW car forum (www.vwvortex.com) for having multiply accounts. I had only one account, my brother account had an account too. we each owned are own computers yet the administrator says we use the same IP. Is this possible? I thought no 2 IPs could be the same?

I assume when you say "we" you mean you and someone else on the same network? If that's the case than you do have the same IP. Your LAN IP address will be difference, but your WAN IP address will be the same. But even so, it's not totally uncommon to see two people with the same IP address.

You have different IP's on your LAN, but you both connect through the same modem, which connects to the same ISP. So any computer thats on your network will have the same IP seen by websites and such.

try a proxy server

DONT TALK ABOUT PROXIES HERE!!!! WHAT ARE YOU, CRAZY, YOU'RE GOING TO GET US ALL BANNED!!!

IF I WAS A MOD, I WOULD BAN YOU FOR LIFE FOR SAYING THE WORD PROXY. AHH! NOW I'VE SAID IT TOO!!!

sorry...i couldnt resist...i had to do it lol

^ lol im kidding....it just seems like if someone mentions proxies, everyone goes crazy...
Thats because in most contexts they are being used toa ctively defeat or bypass network and/or local security policies. For these uses they are both illegal and against our forum rules.

We don't "go crazy" but on average with 2 threads every day asking about them and people recommending them, it get's a tad repetitive...

Use A Proxy
oooh the humour, lol...

You're best bet is to actually contact the admin of the other forum. Just politely tell him that you and your brother use the site but on different accounts... If you actually quote or state your brothers username the admin should know you are telling the truth. TBH, for an admin, thats a fairly n00bish thing to do, ban for mutliple accounts before asking or PM'ing first, lots of people share IP's, large businesses for instance, in a building of hundreds will have only about 10 IP's for making outside connections.

how would do i set up a proxy?

Why would you want to setup a proxy? That would server no use for you since you would still have your IP.

You want to use someone elses proxy, but im not going to go on any further about it, or else i'll be banned as well :P

I actually did contact the admin, I was told I should just blame my brother for it, and that he would not unbanned me. Also about the proxy I had it confused with rotating IPs or something like that.

Well, the admin is a rather large jerk then... He's just being petty.

Also, this thread is getting dangerously close to breaking the rules, thankyou 0MEGA for not divulging deeper into proxies... Using them for a certain purpose may not be illegal (depending on what your doing) but talking about them or actively encouraging them on this forum is against the rules. Let's try to stick with the topic of the author getting back on the forum with the idiot of an admin
