Need help with DSL

My internet is supposed to work right away when all of the lights (Power, Ethernet, DSL, and Internet) come on the modem. But it will take anywhere from 5-8 minutes to be able to get on the internet after the modem lights are on. I talked with support from my provider and told me to try unchecking things in msconfig. That didn't work. So now they say it's something with my computer, and I must handle it. So I came to you guys. Any ideas as to what I should do?

My OS is XP w/SP2 and I have Zonealarm firewall.

Have you tried manually assigning your IP address? This will speed things up. The last thing to initialize on my PC is the LAN also, I only wait about 30 seconds though with automatic IP assignment.

You could also try to lend a router from a friend and see if it works any better. If it does then maybe your router is not working so good.

I don't have a router, but how do I assign myself an IP?
 
I dunno about where you live, but DSL here is managed by PPoE, Cable is handled as dynamic IP -- so that means you'll need to log onto the "DSL network" so to speak. Your ISP should have given you a sheet of paper with all your info (login, password etc) on it.

I do notice that the two computers icon pops up in the tray and says it is acquiring an IP address. But it only sticks around for about 20 seconds.

Yes but....
1. What is your ISP
2. Are you really on DSL?
 
Well if you really are on DSL, then with your contract package or whatever, there will be a snippet that has authentication information. You can use the Windows "New Connection Wizard" with the following steps
  1. Next
  2. Connect to the internet. Next
  3. Setup my connection manually. Next
  4. Connect using a broadban connexction that requires a username and password. Next
  5. Type in a label ("bob"). Next
  6. Type in your authentication info. and finish the wizard

I can't speak for all DSL in the states, but we use a static IP for our DSL.

Ah ok... well in that case, you'd have a piece of paper that has all your information wouldnt you? :)

I was told by our provider that there is no login information or anything. You set up the modem, they activate DSL in the phone line, and that's it.
