better game performance

hi,
im looking for a program that can shut down all unnecessary processes, automatically, when I start up a game, like explorer, antivirus etc, and starts them all again when ive finished.
I found a freeware program 'game XP', but it didnt seem to work at all, or even to install properly, and gave me weird error messages, i dl'd it from here:

is there any other programs like this?

The problem is what you call unnecesary and what I call unneccesary are two different things (especialyl since you consider explorer.exe unnecesary, which technically is true, but kinda dumb lol)

well I only consider explorer.exe to be unnecessary when I am playing a game, as long as it runs itself again afterwards, just to save a chunk of memory and run a bit smoother. also antivirus software i dont need when i am playing a game, because i am not downloading anything, and that too uses alot of memory.

what do you think is unecessary?

i personally think you should just end the processes manually and restart your computer afterwards. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think its pretty much safe to stop any process that isnt system or local service. plus its no extra software and you know everything is gonna be back on when you restart.

I'm not sure how to select the windows extractor, Winrar is set as the default extractor, and when I have the option, open with... I cant find the file path for the windows extractor. where is it? (lol clearly I am no expert)

you are completely right, this will work just as well, except it gets to be a bit of a pain every time I want to play a game, (call me lazy if you want:) ) this program just saves the state of your PC, shuts down all the unneeded processes (everything but system, and local ) and then when you finish it loads the saved state again...

simple! :)

omega, that didnt seem to do much either, but I just uninstalled winrar and then used the microsoft extractor lol it wasnt a full version of winrar anyway. by the way I am using Xp not vista.

He is using the Noir skin for Windowblinds, same one I use. I would get a fresh install of Winrar from Download.com, maybe that will help. Otherwise, i usually just end all the processes that i dont care about and play.

Then you must be doing it wrong, because when you extract the files they should all appear in the same folder as the .rar/.zip file (unless you specified a different location, or used the Extract To command).
 
yeh , i dont know, Ive got it installed now anyway, and it doesnt even seem to make that much difference to my games.
