Geforce 6600 OC Questions

Hi

Right my computer is nearing the end of its useful life and I have already ruled out upgrading it anymore. I intend to build a new desktop in the future sometime around September.

Anyway, My Nvidia Geforce 6600 warranty ran out last month, and I have been looking in to overclocking it, just to get that last bit out of it.

1) Should I use Coolbits?, it seems to be the simplest option, however I can only find a coolbits version 2.0. I would like to know if that is compatible with the latest driver versions. I am currently using Forceware 93.71 which is still the latest release.

2) My card has a heatsink and fan, But there is no cooling to the memory chips. They are positioned all around the GPU.

3) The temps for the card are not great. It Idles at about 48C-50C and will burn at about 62C-64C, so basically do I have an enough of a temp threshold to increase the clocks with.

4) What sort of temps should a stop overclocking?

Anyway I hope someone could answer my questions.

Cheers.

GPUs can withstand very high temperatures, I don't know about the 6600, but my 7900GT have a threshold of 125 degrees before any thermal management mechanisms kick in, so 50 is definitely inside its normal operating range. Why did you wait till after your warranty to overclock it? There is no way anyone can tell if you have overclocked it or not if you do it via software. I did a pencil mod on my 7900GT to increase the voltage of the GRAM, and burnt it out because of a miscalculation of the resistance and I got a RMA replacement in 3 days.
Regarding overclocking your card, I suggest some third party software, like riva tuner and powerstrip, Coolbits doesn't let you go as high as the other ones.

ok thank you for your comments.

can i have coolbits enabled and then install rivatuner? If i decied to use that instead.

Yes, I have overclocked my 6500 A bit. but I want to go higher. do I have to undo all the changes I made in coolbits to be able to overclock it properly?

No you don't. Riva tuner kinda uses the same technique as coolbit, they are just using a feature embedded into the Nvidia driver. So the newest setting will override the last.
