is this cpu faster then the fastest Pentium D?

I know that the Intel core 2 duo is the best cpu right now. but i don't care about it being the best.

What i want to know is that if AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ can out perform the fastest pentium D. How about any of the Core 2 duo models?

If it can't which model of the Pentium D/Core 2 duo can it out perform?

Not comparing it to any other cpu, how is AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+? Is it a good cpu?

Is Athlon 64 X2 4200+ better then any of the single core AMD/intel cpus performance wise? including cpu with Hyper threading and Hyper transport.

thanks

The X2 4200+ would outperform almost all of the Pentium D series, with the possible exception of the Pentium D @ 3.4Ghz (I think it's the 950). And it's on par with the Core 2 Duo E6300, but any Core 2 Duo over that would outperform it.

Thanks the_other_one for the link. Actully i have no idea which 4200+ is the one that i want. are they fairly matched in performance? Thats what it seems based on the scored from pcmark05 cpu.

I was a little confused since 4200+ scored was not so expressive from the pcmark05, it just outperforms the Pentium D 805. Thanks for the input -0MEGA-

EDIT: is it still the same with the X2 and duo core, that AMD is for gaming and Intel for multitasking?

I completely agree. Just from personal experience, I have an E6400 right now. i used to own an X2 4200+. I personally can tell a massive difference from the 4200+. I know the E6400 is a notch higher, but still. I thought it might be nice to have some first hand experience.

that 4200+ was the 939 version. DDR2 gives around 10 more frames per sec
I wouldnt quite say 10FPS.

Thats comparing both 939 and AM2 versions, with the same video cards and such, but with DDR and DDR2 RAM.
