I have a Sony Vaio FS660...I have installed several things throughout the last year and a half. The start up is also starting to run slow. Any ideas for speeding up my computer? Also, do you know a good spyware program? or anything else you think I should have? let me know, thank you!

How much RAM do you have? if you have less than 256MB on it, then you need more. Since you added more things, at start up it takes more RAM. go into RUN and type "msconfig" go to the last tab and unselect anything you don't want starting up. You will save some RAM by that.

Generally after a year of use on any system the hard drive(s) will have a tendency to become fragmented as well as seeing a number of "orphans" in the system registry itself after the removal, addition, and further removals of different programs in that time frame. Besides using the defrag tool provided in Windows you can also clean up the system registry with a good cleaner. One good one like RegCleaner will automatically located and remove now useless entries there.

ADE touched on the use of the msconfig utility for reducing the number of items that load up along with Windows. You start this up by typing msconfig at the Run prompt right off of the Start menu. In addition to the startup group you can also look over the services section with the "hide microsoft services" box checked off to see what you may not want loading up along with Windows as well.

RegCleaner only creates a desktop shortcut and is free at http://www.dewassoc.com/support/useful/regcleaner.htm

To use this you can manually remove registry keys for programs installed in the main window or go up to the menu bar and find "tools". There the "registy cleanup" will open a second dropdown menu where you can click on the "do them all" option for a good cleaning of the system registry. It will automatically cleanup "orphans" no longer used values without hampering other things.

OK, your RAM is not the issue. and PC eye, I'm appalled at you! You didn't do your customary welcome to CF speech :P

Gee? I just let RegCleaner loose again on the Vista drive here and it still comes out a few values to remove. Those are mainly found after taking a screen capture of something however. That reminds me I'm overdue for a defrag on the XP Home primary drive. ! Then there will be the XP Pro sata drive to ... blast that regular periodic system maintainence. :(

RegCleaner has shown itself far better for manual edits or automatic cleanup of the registry itself. CCleaner is geared more towards cleaning out the off line content for IE and getting rid of the clutter of empty folders left behind by software installers and uninstallers. The main window for RegCleaner lists all non MS programs installed saving time opening the regedit tool for manual removal of entries one at a time. Each is good for what is meant for mainly.
