usb wireless mouse help

I have a new e1505 (two months old) and bought a new Microsoft wireless mouse 3000 for it and it was working fine until yesterday. I plugged in the USB receiver and the mouse wouldn’t work or would just skip and freeze and then totally stop when I tried to use it. When I plug it in the computer it makes the little jingle that its connected and it also shows up in the device manager that its there. I tried a different USB port with the same results. I reset the receiver and mouse buttons but it still didn’t work. One thing I noticed is that the USB receiver was getting hot after being plugged in for only 30 sec to a minute. Then after an hour I plugged it in again and now it works fine. Does this seem like it would be a bad USB mouse receiver or do you think a bad board would cause this?

Sounds like the receiver's on the fritz. I assume you have other mice that work just fine? Is it possible to get another identical receiver and try it, just to be sure it's not software related...

I never installed any software. I would just plug in the receiver in the usb port and it would work just fine. I'm leaning towards a bad receiver. Would a bad board cause the receiver to get hot in less then a minute or if the receiver is bad is it possible to get very warm to the touch? This would happen in any usb port I used. But the strange thing is I tried it an hour later and it worked fine?

Whether you installed software or not, there is still software that is loaded(basic windows drivers) to make the mouse work. It's not impossible for these things to get corrupt. Rare, but it will happen...

How do I go about checking or changing these drivers. I was in the device manager and it shows my touchpad under the mouse setting and when I plug the mouse receiver in it also pops up under the mouse setting and if I disconnect the receiver it takes it off. I am running vista 32bit. The mouse I got does say it will work with vista. It has worked fine for two months until yesterday.

Do you have any idea what would cause the mouse receiver to heat up so quick when I plugged it in. I tried all the usb ports with the same results. When I tried it an hour later and the mouse worked it did not heat up at all. Would this be a sign of a bad receiver? What controlls the usb ports. Would I have a bad motherboard? I did exchange the mouse for a new one today but have not tried it yet.

All I could say about drives is to maybe try a windows recovery(assuming Vista has that) Maybe try to load the actual drivers...

As for the heat, no clue unless it's shorting out somehow inside.
