Sony Laptops

In general, are Sony VAIO laptops bad? I know this is a vague question, but a friend of mine keeps telling me not to get a Sony laptop. Are these laptops generally more expensive, simply for its brand? Are there possible cons in the Sony VAIO laptops they sell at Best Buy for $700-$1000 (I am thinking prices more along the lines of $800)?
 
VAIO laptops are expensive but they are very good, the screens are better than many other laptop monitors, my dad has one from work and it's really powerful yet small. I only went HP because it was smaller.

The Sony as you know is up there in the ranking as HP/Compaq - Toshiba, etc. So, the price you will pay a bit more for. Although, they have some differences... unless you buy a Panasonic, their tough-books are amazing... I sold one two years ago to a eye doctor who loves it!

So, it proves to show you what you want to spend on a notebook.
