case fans not spinning

Hey guys,

i was just wondering, my friend just bought a new case and a couple of case fans... he tried to connect the fans to the power supply but when he actually switch on the power supply nothing happens!!! he asked me this cause he knows i have been reading CF for a while...

i asked him whether he got any other parts installed... he said that the rest of the parts are on he way... but he was just playing around with the case and the fans... (just wanna see how it looks... 1st build for him)

the first thought that come into my mind was because he don't have other part to complete the whole computer but then again i realised that case fans usually connect directly to the PSU... so im confused

what do you guys think??
i need help with cause im not sure what to do... :o

If your friend used the wrong plug(3.3v or 5v) the fans won't run if they require 12v. The supply itself may be bad? That's one other less likely problem there.

Doesnt the motherboard have to be to connected for everything to operate?

thats what i thought at first but after reading further and googling, i found out that case fans connect directly to PSU...

@PC Eye - the case fan uses 4 pin connection (like one for DVD Drives)

The Power supply wont power up untill you connect it to the case power switch and the board unless you jump it off

oh... i see... i guess i'll tell him to wait until all the components are here and assemble the computer and test it out again...

thanks guys... he was really worried that the PSU is bad... :)

If your friend tried jumping it which is highly doiubted there and saw nothing then the worry would be on the supply. The four pin plug is the standard 12v molex type there. The only plug seen on many boards is the 12v auxillery closer to the AGP or PCI-Express video card slots. You often plug those in on one of the 12v rails where there the matching connection plug is free depending on how many fans are installed.

Yep, rest assured, everything is most likely fine :). That's what people get for playing with their components before everything arrives! :D :P

I am in the exact same position right now.. except I have the motherboard mounted

I just got the new antec 900 case. The fans on it seem to plug ONLY into the PSU (unlike my old fans). I mounted the motherboard.. plugged in the big white plug from PSU to mobo, another small plug to a designated spot.. and WAMO.. nothing happens.

I CANNOT get anything to happen other than to turn on a green LED light on the mobo. I keep thinking the CPU fan will turn on if I turn on the power but nothing happens other than that stupid light.

I have tried a million times to plug in the fans into random plugs coming out of the PSU (btw are all those plugs the same? Can I just use whatever is in a conventient spot).. but nothing happens.

I cannot get any fans to turn on.. and I don't wanna go any further till I can

this might be a dumb question, but have you tried pressing the power button on you case??

another qn, is the power cable from the case plugged onto to the mobo? cause when i was messing around with my friend's case i notice a cable from the case that s labelled "power" or something like that... so maybe you need to plug that one first...

im not too sure with the significance of the green LED light... since i have not done my first build yet :D:D:D kinda waiting for the price drop as everyone else... maybe someone else can comment on that...

hopefuly the 1st two questions helps....

yea I have plugged in the tiny little "power button" thing that is attached to the case. I tried pressing the button on the case.. nothing.

meh.. I need someone to show me how to do this haha.

When plugging in the small wires coming from the front or top on some models of the case you have to refer to the board diagram seen in the user manual. Generally there are numbered lines with a name for each pointed at plus the abbreciation of power led seen as "pled" and hdd led for the hard drive activity light. You also have the power button and reset button on most there.

On the board the block of small pins closest to the edge is for the power while the next block above depending on direction you look is for the front or top additional usb ports. There are different colors seen for each set of pins on the blocks for the different items.

yep... I did all that. Everything is plugged in that I can find to plug in (except the video card) and still NOTHING. I am amazingly frustrated. I swear all the power cords are plugged in.. I am just not getting anything other than an LED light to tell me the mobo is in "standby" or something.

Whoever said building a computer is easy is a liar.

PLEAASE help me. I have no idea why I am getting no fan signals. There must be some all knowing website I can go to or something. I am opperating on absolutely no directions. The mobo manual really doesnt help at all cuz i've done everything in it and still.. nothing.

make a pic of what you've done so far? you've got no power what so ever.
So you've either made a huge mistake (or put the power button plug in the wrong place). Can you make a picture of it and post it here?

No I do have power. The green LED light on the motherboard turns on.
Here are some pictures.. but I don't see how you could decipher what is going on haha..

I plug in the power cord into the back of the power supply and flip the switch. Then the LED green light turns on. I now assume that if I press the power button on the front of the computer, the computer will turn on and the fans will start running. They don't.. nothing happens.

I think its possible that I made mistakes hooking up other stuff, but I'm thinking it was just some thing I did wrong with the power so NOTHING is turning on. I really don't get it. There were two spots I plugged the power into.. one big white one and one smaller one. I get the LED light. Why won't it turn on? Am I missing something big?

A reversed pair of wires or one left off will stall everything. You will have to get in there with a pocket magnifying glass and a pen light to look over the small wires coming in from the front panel. The "pled", "reset", and "hdd led" wires can't be cross plugged or have one left off. The green led being on shows that the supply is working and is providing what the board needs. With the board in off mode the fans won't start.

For those with experience the two pins on the block are often jumped in case the power button is no good? If the case came with a bad switch ut oh! But it's also too easy to reverse the wires too.
