what do i need to run my laptop off of wireless throughout my house? i have ethernet at my house and im not sure if i can just buy a wireless router, hook it up and have wireless internet on my laptop. i was looking through newegg.com and there is just too many choices. i live outside of town with no worry that someone else is living close enough to mooch off of me. i would like to keep this set up as cost efficient as possible, thanks.

im no expert at all. but i know you have to have the wireless card for the laptop to go along with the wireless router. if not, it has no way to pick up the signal (unless its built in?).

well i just ordered the dell and it says that it has it built it. i was also wondering if the wireless will act the same way as the wired?

alright that one sounds good. what about flashing with DD-Wrt? no idea what that is. how about the wireless compared to the wired?

the router I linked to can be flashed with dd-wrt firmware. you shouldnt notice to big of a difference between wireless and wired. you will still get broadband speeds with wireless. But, if you get to far from the router your speeds with start to slow up.

alright..how do i flash the router with the dd-wrt firmware and whats the advantage of doing so?

although you can put dd-wrt on the buffalo model, it is a little more challenging then the rest, i suggest reading this article http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installation
and looking under to buffalo section.
Some advantages of using dd-wrt (firmware for the router that isnt from the manufacturer orignally) is having a more stable router and having better firewall support, and better driver support as well as a few others.
But in all honesty, the firmware already on the buffalo one i linked to is perfectly fine
hope this helps

so the buffalo will work just fine for use in my home? will my laptop just pick up the wireless internet from the router by itself or do i have to do other stuff to set it up?

Well, you will have to set up the router to work with your internet connection, but if you don't use security (which I dont reccomend doing) then once you got it set up you'd just go onto the laptop and use your wireless card software to connect to the network. Most of the time just reading the instructions for the router will be an easy enough setup.

Even living is the sticks, I would never leave any wireless access point open for everyone access. It doesn't take a computer wizz to setup a WPA passcode between access point and laptop.

even if there is no other way for someone to pick up signal from my router. i live far enough away from other people, and im pretty positive that they dont have the brains to even know there is wireless internet. i would just like it so that when i start up my laptop, i have instant internet like i would have with a wired connection.

alright sounds good. i just ordered the buffalo wireless router that was linked to me from newegg.com. is it worth it to flash it when i get it w/ the other firmware or will it work find for my needs?
