buying a new laptop... Vista vs. RAM and compatibility

Hi Guys,

I'm buying a new laptop (want it as small as possible since I travel a lot). I fell in love with this one, it quite handy. But are older programmes such as Adobe Acrobat 5.0, and a programme I use a lot, SigmaPlot, compatible with Vista?

I will use it mainly for word, excel, outlook and forums on the internet. No online gaming (which I've heard can be a problem with Vista).

Some people say they love Vista and some say that it uses up all the RAM, so will it be overkill to run Vista on this computer?

Btw. can anyone tell me the difference between Core Duo 2 and the processor in this computer?

Vista should run fine on that, but I don't much care for it.

And Core 2 Duos are much faster processors, so if you can find a similiar laptop with a core 2, I would go with that.
 
Why would you use Acrobat Reader 5, when you can get 8.0 for free, which is compatible with Vista?

Almost any fairly new program or game will work with Vista, but a few older programs will not. IMO Vista is a great OS, but it does take up alot of RAM, but you have 1GB so that should be sufficient.

And the Core 2 Duo is basically just a newer version of the Core Duo, with 64-Bit support, and is slightly tweaked.

Also, a 3-cell battery is horrible! Most laptops come with 4-cells, and the ones that i've had which come with 4 cells last one hour max.

It's not Reader, its Acrobat. I need to edit PDF files, and Acrobat 5.0 works well on my old computer :) -if I can avoid it I would prefer not to buy a new license.

Thanks for the comment on the battery, I will pay attention to that!

How big is the difference?

I mean, what speed in Core 2 Duo equals the 1.73 Core Duo?

(Perhaps I'm better of buying a slower Core 2 Duo??)

A Core 2 Duo and Core Duo running at say, 1.73Ghz, will perform very similarly, theres only a slight difference.

The main reason i would get the Core 2 Duo instead is because it's a 64-bit processor.
 
The speed difference is about 10-15% but battery life doesn't go down.

I don't think SigmaPlot works under Vista right now.
