norton or mcafee?

if your looking for a good internet security suite,Then give Zonealarm security suite a try or i found F-Secure security suite to be quite good.

Both of them you can download a trial version from their website :)

Don't use Norton or Mcafee. It slows down your computer and not good at detecting virus/adware/spyware (From my own experience).

For a good antivirus, I recommend Nod32 or Avast. I personally think Nod32 is better. But Avast is good too and free for home use.

Currently I don't have antispyware and I only use windows firewall.

Avast is awesome...i found it to be much better than AVG,AVG did not detect some things on my that Avasts real time protection did.

i use nothing but the firewall built into my router

every virus i ever got was because i did something stupid, they don't/can't install themselves

hmm..

Yes, yes they can..

yeah i think they can....i had some damn trojan downloader or something along time ago and it kept installing software that i had not even wanted or put on myself.

No.....

There are virus/adware that perpetually download and install MORE virus/adware.

But the initial program has to be installed by you.

Typically bundled into a program's installer you download off the web, or a fake music/photo/video file that's actually an executable with a fake file extension, etc.

I mean think about it, no benign software ever manifests itself onto your computer, so how could malicious software? It's gotta be run/installed by the operator, knowingly or not.

You don't have to do something stupid to get virus/adware/spyware.
They are all over the place. In p2p, IRC, internet, and even removable disks.
They also come with friendly-looking software like download accelerators (most of em contain spyware).

So, it's safer to use an antivirus. You don't have to pay anything for avast:) .

I like Norton; I've been using their products for the last 3 years and I've had NO viruses, trojans, etc. + i hardly see any banner ads on websites, which is really nice. McAfee will give you viruses. All of the computers that i've worked on that had McAfee had viruses. (Viruses are probably on the install disc). AVG is one of the best (free) antivirus software out there, and zone alarm would be the best free firewall.
