Free web site/page - questions

Just a few questions, mostly because I need a bit more money for a good computer but also because I have an idea that just might work. ((By free site I ment a subdomain, like where a 'main' site gives me x mbs or pages and my domain is mainsite.com/mysubdomain/page2.html .))

1. Can free wbsites/webpages be profitable, or even have a decent visitor count?
2. Does length/name of the parent/main domain matter?
3. Should I start my own ads in the begining or after there is an established visitor base?
4. What's the best way to start a viewer base?

I have seen some of these questions answered before but those were for domains purely owned by the asker, and for 'sites' or pages without an advertisement already on the page. Free sites are different because there is already an ad on the page or pages, the domain is longer unless you find a really superb 'main' site, and other factors I've overlooked or asked a question about.

EDIT I'm also looking for a site that offers the free site service, with good uptime and minimal 'we reserve the right to delete your account at anytime...' because that would really suck. I would prefer it to be at least semi-easily remembered domain.

What was your site about? Do you know why it failed? What did you do to promote it? What ad company did you use? What 'main site' did you use?

1. Profitable? Probably not. Visitor count? Probably. (explained below)

2. To some extent, yes. Some people would rather type del.google.com rather than del.probablythebestsearchengine.com.

3. Ads? You might not even be able to start at all. Most free sites wont let you put your own adsense ads, or the like. They usually have their own ads which generate revenue for them, rather than you.

4. Visitor count viewer base? You are probably limited here too. If you site generates enough visitors to a point where you get capped off, then your site get's shutdown temporarily until the next month or period when you are given more bandwith.

There are some sites that in bold, large type on thier homepage 'You can add your own ads', the problem would be ad providers. Second, I'm hoping that by the time my bandwidth is met or exceeded my ad will be making enough for me to consider my own site.

If you intend on doing so, go for it. Don't take my word for it. Hosting isn't that expensive right now so if you REALLY want to make money, you have to invest in it too. You will never really earn money for free. People are smarter nowadays and they will not be clicking your ads like mad.

Maybe a couple clicks a week? Even that?

How would my own domain help with the 'couple links a week? even that?' ? I just thought starting small would help, gain a user base that isn't there because I told them to check it out then go all out.

Your domain name is the first people see when they go on your website. They either type it or click on it. If you're domain name is something like your-domain.freewebsite.com , people won't trust what's inside ( usually).

You can get a deal for 8$ with domain name (200GB space) at hostingplex.com... You're not going to earn mopney if you don't spend a little first... that's how e-business works now.

If you have more questions, I'll be pleased to answer you. :D

There are sites that can 'rename' a domain name. Like www.site.tk or something like that.

It doesn't rename your domain. It's just your page within their page. Like google when you search for images. You click on the image, it shows the original site with the image in their page, then to the picture. Very simple concept.

Except NOW... you are making money for two hosts, and you still ain't getting any.

Okay... awardspace allows me to put my own ads on a subdomain, would that ever make enough to pay for my own domain? award space isn't too long or random lettered, right?

No if you want to start an e-business you'll need your own domain....

You can try but there is less chances you succeed...

It's not a buisness just sort of a journal (not diary). Have you seen sites about one person's comics? (vc cats) Well I'd sort of do something similar, just not comics.

EDIT www.vgcats.com
(I put VC instead of VG)

Well if you want to add google ads for example, you'll need users to click on them which is unlikely to be....

Because times have changed and viewers don't click on them anymore.

Too much advertising kills advertising and this is exactly what happened on today's internet.
