Files load then it says in the bottom left bottom corner: please wait .....
Been like that for 30 mins
Is that normal?

When are you seeing this? You will have to add a little more detail on this. Taking 30min. to load anything is far from normal! I could see 3 but no way for 30 even 10min.! Is this happening when Windows is first loading?

Are you trying to install or get to the recovery console? It sounds like your disk drive needs cleaning or the disk may be scratched or simply has smudge marks on it? If it's a brand new disk you could have received a bad disk to add on top of the rest. Something certainly isn't being read correctly for the installer to hang. Try a good lens cleaner and inspect your disk closely.

I am installing over win98.
Ill try cleaning the cd/-rom

Are you trying this will 98 is running or did you boot from the XP disk? You may also want to plan on deleting the current Fat32 primary for a new NTFS. It will be much better then simply running XP on a Fat primary. I've dons that one and still ended up wiping that installation on a second drive at the time. I wanted to take notes with XP on Fat and dumped it fast! I do know someone who upgraded 98 to XP back in 2003 and still runs it on the original primary. But NTFS just happens to be the best of two there!

bad os disk gonna get a re-placement ;)

Are you going with a sata or ide with that? I ran a comparison to see where the ide drives here stood against the two new satas added recently. The max seen for the ide dirves saw about 57-58mb per second data transfer rate. The satas took charge with the minimum speed seein 67-68mb! The max ran about 85.4mb per second. A Raptor?
