wireless internet card IP address problem

hi guys,

I just brought a Belkin Pre N network adapter for my laptop and for some unknown reason it wont store the IP address. When i plug it in it says there is limited or no connectivity, but the wierd part is that when i plug an ethernet cable into the back while the card is plugged in the card will read my IP address and work perfectly, i then unplug the ethernet and i can roam around the house surfing wirelessly with no probs. Then when i either take the card out or restart ths laptop it goes back to not being able to find my IP.

Any help will be much appreciated !! Thanks

Is the ethernet plugged to a comp with internet or without? I the comp that it is wired to has internet you are picking up the inernet via cable and this would mean that your card probably is not working. Did it come with software?

it came with the drivers, which i installed. I connect the ethernet, then i connect my wireless card, i then unplug the ethernet. Thats the only way i can connect to the internet through my card at the minute.

do you run any kind of security? What version of windows are you running (assuming it is windows)?

Are you using the OS software or third party software to connect, sometimes they conflict with wifi connections.

I have reinstalled the card 3x, every time it has been the same. I am using Windows XP, the internet connection has no security on it (open network). I do have Norton on the comp though. I am using the Belkin software to manage my wireless connection and i use BT to connect to the internet.

This is really wierd lol.

Disable the third party software and just use the windows software. Right click on your wifi card connection under control panels > network, and go to properties and then hit the wireless tab. Add your network and connect and see what happens. The belkin connection software could be your problem.

by BT do you mean blue tooth?

Do you have the wireless connection set to obtain an IP automatically? (only follow if you have the router set as a DCHP server)
To check click Start
Go to Control Panel
Open Network Connections
Right click on Wireless Network Connection, click Properties
Confirm that the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) box is checked, and double click on it, make sure the Obtain an IP Address Automatically radio is selected, and make sure the Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically radio is selected also
Next, click on the Alternate Configuration tab
Make sure the Automatic Private IP Address radio is selected.
