Irritating message

On every occasion when I go to shut down my computer I receive the following message:

dwwin.exe-DLL Initialization Failed

X The application failed to initialize because the window station is shutting down

OK

Why do I keep getting this message and what can I do to stop getting this message every time I shut down my computer ?

Apparently this is a wide spread problem. http://infospace.abcnews.com/_1_23V8TJW02FBK768__info.abcnws.toolbar/search/web/dwwin.exe-DLL%2B

The driver is part of the Windows Dr.Watson error reporting tool and needs to be kept running. Since this sounds more like a glitch with Windows itself if no offending program can be identified you can give the system file checker a run to see if that will help. First you will a Windows installation disk in the optical drive you use and type in "sfc scanow" at the Run prompt. Once you click the ok button or press enter the system tool will replace or replace any system files found goofed or missing.

When I tried to do a scan I couldn't because the "black" scan page appears for only a fraction of a second. How do I get it to stay on ? I remember I had this problem before and someone told me how to get the run sfc scan now page to stay on.

Once Windows is fully loaded the step there is to bring up the Start menu by clicking on that and then scroll down to the Run command line option. You simply type the "sfc /scannow" without quotes but with the back slash and press enter or click the ok button. This starts the file verification process and will run for several minutes. Without the Windows installation disk in the drive it will prompt you for the location. This is why already having it in and existing the installer will speed things up there.

If it finds any files damaged or missing it then replaces those with fresh copies expanded from the disk. But don't rule out some program refusing to exit when you go to shutdown. The use of the msconfig utility to lighten the load of unnecessary startup items can also help if you have a software problem with something else.

After I click on the ok button the black screen (file verification), flashes for a fraction of a second and then disappears. How do I get it to stay on so that I can do this "process" ?

You have to perform a system restore if this is being seen right after any recent installs or removals of any programs. The system file checker usually goes right through the entire phase unless you are seeing a major problem with Windows itself. You can try to go back on the calendar as far as you can with the Sysyem restore feature. But I suspect that you will need a repair install to get things running normal again.

The repair install method reinstalls main system files without wiping programs and folders. But you usually have to reinstall sound and video drivers to refresh those. A good description of the system file checker is seen at http://www.petri.co.il/what's_system_file_checker.htm This will explain in more detail why you wanted to give this a try first.

Review the warnings given but the article here is one of the best for intructing on how to perfomr a repair install on XP. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Before this you can also try using the sfc scannow command at the "Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt" to see if it will stay running there or reboot to the Safe mode/Command Prompt Only option seen in the F8 boot menu. The fact that it won't stay running isn't good! The repair install would be the next move to make the effort to save the current installation.

You should try opening it in Command Prompt, it will stay open then, it sounds as if it is a command line program
