Frustrating Router Issues

So I have a thinkpad connected to a network for internet off of a router provided by Verizon fios, however I keep my music on a desktop that is nearby and not connected to that network. So instead I have this computer connected to an extra router and I then connected it to my thinkpad through the ethernet port. However as soon as I do this, my internet connection no longer works. The connection is still there, AIM still runs, but the internet does not function. I'm not sure what the issue is here. Could it be because the default gatways are the same?

so you have two routers on the same network? Yes this will cause problems unless you properly configure multi router network.

Give some more descirptive details exactly how you are setting this up, with brands and models if possible.

ok so my main network is on some weird router that came with my fios verizon service provider, so that's wireless. But I also have a desktop which is not connected to this network and doesn't have a wireless card, so I wanted to access that computer from my laptop through an ethernet connection. I used a linksys wrt54g to do this. When I connect the ethernet cable, my wireless internet goes down. I'm guessing maybe my computer tries to get internet from the ethernet, but that isn't connected to the internet. Basically I'm trying to connect to one network wirelessly and another network wired.

I am thinking you have a address conflict.
To resolve this issue you should set the ip of the first router to 192.168.1.1 and turn on the DHCP on this router,
set the ip of the second router to 192.168.1.2 and turn off the DHCP of this router.

Before doing this make sure you dont have any computers on the system with these ip's otherwise they wil conflict 2!!!:)

thanks for the replies but still no luck

The wireless settings are: DHCP on
IP Address: 192.168.1.4
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

The ethernet settings are: DHCP off
IP Address: 192.168.1.101
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.2

as i posted before the router closest to the modem should be the only one with DHCP enabled
that way it will assign the ip of any computer on the network
it sould be the Default gateway for all the systems on the network.

you posted 2 different default gateways, they should both be the same
and it should be the ip of the router closest to the modem

Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Ok i reread the first post over and this is how im am understanding what you are doing.

you have a wireless router/modem that is connected to a laptop wirelessly.

you have a linksys router connected to the laptop wired

you have a desktop connected to the linksys router wired

is this right ? Im not sure this can be done

you have to turn DHCP on one router off, and then make sure that gateway, DNS, etc all point back to the primaryrouter. I have setup mulitple router networks and this is how you do it.

yes deepblue thats right, the setup is like this

Wireless: DHCP On
IP: 192.168.1.4
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Ethernet: DHCP Off
IP: 192.168.1.100
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Only the wireless connection has internet connected to it, the issue seems to be that when ethernet is connected the computer looks to get internet from there instead of the wireless.

Here is your problem

Wifi Router is the DHCP server so I would set it up like this

wifi router - 192.168.1.1
DHCP - enabled
DNS - resolved by DHCP
Gateway - resolved by DHCP

Wired Router - 192.168.1.2
DHCP - disabled
DNS - 192.168.1.1
Gateway - 192.168.1.1

Your ISP probably resolves everything via DHCP.

yea that is the way you would setup a normal multi router setup,
but with him going trough the laptop im not sure about, unless he turned on internet sharing on the laptop.

so basicaly your using the wireless from the laptop and trying to pick it up on the other router as in a HOC connection kinda?? i dont think that will work i have a linksys wrt54g router and i have tried to get it to pick up wireless and couldnt get it to work.

i dont know how well it will work but i am a college student with cable modem n a linksys router and i sell it to other students what im getting to is that i had problems at first that i couldnt get things to work cause my computer is vista and everyone else is xp i found a program that sliced the bs down to point n click its called networkmagic i dont know how well it will helpp it sounds like nething is worth a try good luck
