I was just wondering when i get my new pc should i get vista and will there be any problems with vista??? Like running any steam games and is there any games it wont run>??

If you need to buy an OS, definitely go with Vista. Vista is pretty much standard now on any pre-built PC, so almost all program manufacturers either already have, or soon will have compatible programs for Vista.

When I had Vista about a month ago, all my Steam games worked, and all my other games except BF2142.

I wouldn't say that Vista is the way to go quite yet as a primary OS. If you are currently running XP with a good number desktop applications as well as Steam and other games there will some problems that will appear. Many desktop apps along with some games(recent too) won't even install on Vista like Metal of Honor: Allied Assault. Vista is still the new MS pet with a few bugs and finally some drivers for hardwares becoming available in full versions.

Here Half Life and Episode One ran into some bugs like the initial crashes in EP1 from Creative beta drivers. The latest "bug" is having no way to change sound settings from 5.1 to headphones in HL2 along with the next one where you have to pause the game, re-enter the sound options, and then hear sound after loading the next game map. Vista is currently the second not primary OS at this time.

If you have to buy an OS, theres no reason to buy XP when you will end up having to get Vista within this year if you plan on playing DX10 games. But if you already have XP, then I would agree in saying that theres no urgency in upgrading to Vista.

Many right now are complaining that Vista see poor gaming performance. Another thing at this time is that all games available are still DX9c capable not specifically DX10. That is also going to take some time before you start seing a good lineup of non XP suited games released. But this would be the case for XP when newer games released required DX9.

The current problem seeing a need to reinstall HL2 also means spending the time downloading HL1, EP1, and CS:S all over again due to some unknown bug with sound in the Steam engine lately. The last and latest update seems to have foobarred sound in the game itself while EP1 still runs fine along with HL1. The other games as well as Audigy speaker settings otherwise are normal. If it isn't the new version of Windows it's the drivers for them!

Well if he's buying a new PC, then theres no need to reload HL2 because he wouldnt have it installed, and where did you come up with that anyways? lol

Vists is getting better in gaming performance, so the performance hit with Vista isnt as great as it used to be. And there are a couple DX10 game benchmarks that are DX10, Lost Planet and Call of Jurez (sp?) comes to mind.

for battlefield 2 games u need patches , and some drivers, just have ur hardware updated and make sure its fast enough to run vista

The need to reinstall HL2 here is due to problems seen with it on the recent Vista installation. That was a fresh install of HL2 plus the others on a fresh installation of Vista. You are the one getting lost there. Vista was installed a third time here for correcting a multiboot configuration that then saw HL2 installed there and is currently in need of a reinstall due to problems seen now after the latest Steam update.

With XP still being the primary OS in use at this time since Vista was only released at the end of january game manufacturers are not going to push out DX10 oinly games right now and have only a limited number of buyers. The improvement? seen in game performance at this time would be due to better drivers for hardwares finally becoming available for use on Vista.

What are you talking about? He is buying a new PC, he will only have one partition, who knows if he even has HL2. I dont know where your coming up with him having to "reinstall" games when they were never installed in the first place.

I never said he had to reinstall anything. As explained earlier the latest Steam update seems to have caused problems on the current installation here. The real surprise is seeing 6-7yr. old games actually doing better on Vista then the 2005+ ones currently out. MoH won't even install on the Home Premium version while Return to CastleWolfenstein runs flawlessly? That was a rather interesting development to see.

Btw, I am going to be biulding my own PC not buying it pre-built... ANd PC-EYE and Omega will i notice a BIG differnence in performance when running games like... Counter-strike source possibly oblivion and any games for that matter. My possible build is in my SIG And if i will notice a differnce can you tell me in FPS or in a % compared to XP (ie. 100fps in xp 90fps on vista=10% decrese)

Thank you
