AMD Build help

Hey Guys!
I have never built my own computer before and I am planning on building one soon. I will be using it for mostly. I need pretty much everything but operating system, and monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, stuff like that. I have an 800 dollar budget and I will be doing minimal oc'ing if any. Any suggestions would be great!

Are you going to be planning a gaming build or just an average desktop with maybe some multimedia added in? For both a gaming build or work horse for things lke video capturing/editing you should considder a pair of 1gb memory dimms namely DDR2 800 at the present time for both XP and especially Vista with it'e newer additional features.

ATI or NVidia for the video card? You don't have to spend a fortune to see an adequate card while still something more recent for continued driver support. The usual top three makes of boards are Asus, Gigabyte, and MSI with things going slow at the Asus support site lately. The Socket AM2 boards have seen a good price reduction even as low as $50 so finding a board isn't a big task. But that will be first on the list.

I'm looking at either the FX-62 or the 6000+ X2 3.0ghz model seen at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103773 hopefully OEM sometime soon for an upgrade here. For some reason the FX-60 disappeared and is no longer carried for the swift replacement build here last spring. A later upgrade to an AMD quad core is also considered.

The board looked good with SLI support at the link there. I see newegg is out of the 7900GT models completely. The 7950GTs and Radeon X1950XTs are seen for $199.99. The FX line is the performance series in both the 939 and AM2 lineups of AMD models. The Opterons lean towards server cases while the X2s are usually seen as the desktop models for multitasking. Some in each line will obviously oc better then others.

(The two links for the reactable demos show how to make music by a rather different means there not to get off subject. I haven't decided whether or not to simply remove those yet. A different look at technology there.)

It would be be better to get this one for 10 bucks more

This would be a better card if your tring to keep the money down

i dont quite understand your logic on the vid card thing. the one you suggested is more expensive than the one i have up. do you mean that it would be better to get the one u suggested and get a non sli mobo than to get an sli mobo and get a second 7900gs? please explain

i am what your kind call a
noob.
haha

That card supports DirectX 10 and can be SLI too and is a better card than the 7900gs, better future proof.

this is what "I" would get, basicly what i have or am going to get...but i to get the foxconn version of this mobo

EDIT: I forgot a Power supply but i think theres room in the budget for one...lol

i wont be needing dx10 because I am sort of anti-vista right now. i will probably end up using xp for another year or so. if i were to get vista i would need it to be included in the budget and some convincing haha.

if you plan on going sli in the future, that motherboard i posted would be the way to go because of the 590sli chip set. It runs them both at x16 unlike the 570sli cuts sli down to x8. just something to consider ;)

i like the dual 120mm fans in that case. i was originally lookin at a cooler master centurion 5 for the case but its not very easy on the eyes. lemme try and find a decent psu...

I'll be waiting for a look at the Radeon R600 models here. Those top over the 8800s even and offer a better future insurance there. But even the 7900GT would be a move up from the 7900GS series while even the 7950s gain there. Newegg at this time has a limited inventory to look over on a lot of things lately.

when i said that i didnt need an os i meant that i have xp. i have microsoft office and alot of the games i play were made in the times prior to vista. will they be compatible?

Surprise! You should be looking at the games that will and those that won't thread started on just that seen at http://www.computerforum.com/82219-pc-games-will-wont-vista.html

While one more recent game, Metal of Honor: Allied Assault wouldn't even install on Vista here some older games from 6-7yrs. have actually done better then some Steam games. To correct a new problem seen with a Steam update not only Half Life 2 but HL1, Episode One, and CS:S will also have to be reinstalled after download from Steam. The Soldier of Fortune I+II versions seem to run well except for an occasional lag in the sequel there. Return to CastleWolfenstein runs like a charm on Vista of all OSs! No crashes yet!

dangit. i love moh allied assault. haha. hey did u hear about starcraft 2? thats probably gonna run on vista. k nfs carbon should 2 right?

There are a few good makes and models to choose from depending on where your price range for the supply itself. A quality 500w+ supply will run from $70 up as a rule and usually at the price is due to a rebate. For SLI or Crossfire ideas you would be looking at $100+ at time easily. It also depends on where you buy from. Lately newegg is a little low on inventory when browsing there. MoH refused to go on while others saw no install headaches!

The first thing now to do is decide on board, cpu, and memory keeping in mind what would be spent towards a video card and considering expansion over onboard sound as well. Onboard isn't that great for serious gaming! On a lesser build here I swapped out a 480w for a 550w simply from adding drives in.
