there should always be a 3 pin on your motherboard... and what do you mean it stops? it shouldnt... unless the violtage is more or something. ive heard that some mobos dont make the fan spin until it gets to a certain temperature

Yes, that is correct, it is on a lot of the core 2 duo stock HSF's. This type of fan is known as a step-up fan. It only spins when the temperature reaches a certain degree. I don't think it has anything to do with being a 3 pin connector.
