Computer Field?

Overkill

Does anyone here work on/work with computers for a career? I'm looking to work with computers as a career in the future and just looking to hear what others have to say, advice and such. I'm looking for some info below to help me, their are so many computer jobs out there I only know the common jobs. I've looked into a career in computer programming, but I've never writen code. Honestly, the one reason I've looked into that is the money. I want to make at least 50K a year. Right now I go to Vo-Tech for Web Design, it's ok, but for some reason I can't see making an actual career out of it considering people can just hire anyone and not be a full time job. I've noticed for most programming jobs, you're required a 4 year degree in Computer Science. I'd like to try more for something thats earned in about 2 years, but if the money is worth it then that's different. If I think of anything else, I'll post up. Thanks for everything guys, I appreciate it, helping a kid find his way into a career choice.

Job Title
Job Description
How you like it
Degree Required?
Hours?
Salary? (You don't have to actually tell a #)
Other?

Also, does anyone know what kind of jobs are going to be in high demand within the next 5 years, not IT related? I thought I could base a career choice off of this, look into careers that will be high in demand so I can plan smart and plan for the future. Maybe you could just tell what you do, how you like it and such. Thanks alot guys, I know these threads might come up alot, but I'm just trying to figure things out.

only advise is go into whatever you are interested and ask yourself do you want to do this for the rest of your life? you have no idea how many people i know changed their career or major when they later found out it is not for them. 1 it is a waste of time and money.

Job Title: Network Administrator( i actually deal with computers more than routers stuff like that )
Job Description: network admin/tech support/pc tech
How you like it: it is a pretty easy job, i am on this forum at work :)
Degree Required? no, i got in just for being CERTIFIED, but they would pay me more if i have a degree... i'm graduating pretty soon :D ( no school for me for awhile! :D )
Hours? 8- 10 hours occasionally overtime :D
Salary? (You don't have to actually tell a #) lets just say i can live pretty comfortably :D
Other? this job is not for everybody, you gotta love computers and stuff and work with people even though you would think this is a solo kinda thing especially if you're the only admin in the company.

I like how i'm able to get the title of Network Administrator :) while at the same time do stuff like the people here do: build computers but i also do this at work and i often get calls for computer problems and it is pretty relaxing stuff here and there like going to Compusa to pick up some goodies for the company and sometimes myself :) no need to make a trip from home again xD it is pretty awesome because i have not work at any other place where i can have so much freedom moving around the place.

I'm working a small network administration job one day a week for a small business. Along with a Help Desk job at the college I attend. I like both, but they don’t pay so well because one is work study and the other I just don’t work their enough to make any money.

If you are looking into getting into IT make sure you pick one or two areas to focus in. These being:
Windows Network Administration
Unix/Linux
Computer Science (Programming)
Cisco (Routers and switches)
Database Administration (MS SQL, Oracle)
Security and Forensics (Ethical Hacking, Firewall Technology)
To name a few of the top of my head. I'm sure some other people will add more.
Some of these are better paired then other such as Computer Science and Unix/Linux Cisco and Windows.

Kof2000 what certifications do you have? I’ve got my A+ and Network+ and I’m working on my MCSA

Man I've been looking for a thread like this!

So as for your job, what type of certs do you need and do you work at a large corporation or smaller company instead? I'm going for a degree in either database management OR networking. Your type of job seems right up my alley! Could you post more info on here or PM me about how to get into a field like yours please? Thanks!

A+ and Network+ are the basics that you will need when looking for a job. It is possible to not have it and still get hire but those exams are easy so why not just pay the couple hundred dollars? I'm the only IT guy in the company with 50+ employees meaning around that many computers. what you should do is get your certification while in school.

If you want to become a Network Administrator you should just apply at Heald for your AA or you can try online DEVRY, from there if you decide to go for your BA or MA then is your choice on how much money you want to make. :)

It also depends on the company you're working with and the people there. If you dont like it you should leave and try other places and dont get stuck in once place.

my high school classmate is now working for a company doing VIRTUAL REALITY stuff he got his MASTERS a few years ago in ICS and he's making alot of money but we're basically doing the same thing : sitting on our butt staring at computers :)

alot of people are doing it is good, that means there's competition :D

Ok great! Thanks for all the info! I was thinking of getting my A+ cert this summer and then going for either an MSCE or Network + like you. How much preparation would I need for the A+ exam? Would you recommend at least 2 months of study before hand or something longer/shorter? I'm pretty good with the hardware aspect of the computer, hence why I want my A+, but as far as networking goes, are there any other "must haves" in certs for that field other than Network +?

Thanks again for all the info! I actually had a job interview this morning for a Technology Specialist position in my local school district. I've never been so excited for a job!
