I'm looking to install my first Linux system and I can't decided which to go with. Which would you choose and why?
what are the advantages and disadvantages of them?
Of what? The Desktop Managers?

yeah, if ya don't mind
This is what gets me, you go to website GNOME website and under "what is GNOME?" The first thing it says is: "GNOME offers an easy to understand desktop for your Linux or UNIX computer"
Well, they ALL say that!![]()
I personally don't like ubuntu all that much, its okay but it is good for beginners. I say try out kubuntu because KDE has a kind of windows feel for it, then move on to other things. Remember that no distro is best for everything, so your preference and opinion is really what will matter. Also, depending on what you want to accomplish may determine what distro you use.
I suggested that because someone who is switching would feel way more comfortable in KDE, and just wait till ver 4 comes out, its gonna be sweet.
It probably will be, but I can't stand the way they spell everything.
like konsole
kwrite
knetworkmanager>?
LOL, I am not a huge fan of Gnome, those devs do some flaky stuff sometimes, but then again gnome and KDE are both kind of distro elite, some distros work better with gnome, others work better with KDE...Debian distros, sure either will probably work okay.
I like Sabayon's interface a lot better, but I think Ubuntu is a lot more capable.

Jordan,
I really appreciate your explaination of the different DE's. It was very helpful to me.
