Need help choosing a CPU

I am currently in the process of saving up money for a new PC and I was looking around and I see that currently Intel has AMD beat. Well, I normally don't like Intel but if AMD doesn't have anything planed for the near future to release I will go with Intel. Now, here is the question who should I go with this time around? I really don't have a price range, as long as it isn't like $500 or more.

thanks

well I was just looking at the Itel Core 2 Quad Q6600 here and it looks like for the money it would really be worth it. I know its over my limit but not by much. What would you guys think of that one?

Ok, well i have decided that i am going to save a little more and get a quad core CPU but now the question is which one? I am looking on newegg and I see the server cpus and the desktop cpus and the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 looks good and is a good price but the Intel Xeon E5335 also looks good. Now my question is, is it really worth the extra money for the little extra FSB. Also the xeon is a lower clocked cpu. Does anyone have something to add? or say?

Dude just to let you know if you get that Intel CPU you know you need new motherboard + basically everthing else that would have to go with that Motherboard that the CPU is needed for. btw no get the Q6600

If you can afford the Q6600, then of course get that one, but if you can't then you should get the E6600, that chip overclocks like there is no tomorrow.

I wouldnt go with the Q6600 yet, it's still really expensive, and for the msot part you wont notice a difference (especially in gaming) compared to the E6600.

i agree... not many software manufacturers develop programs/patches for quad cores, and i feel that it will be some time before such measures are put in place... it's better to save your money and get a cheaper, dual-core Core Duo...

OFF TOPIC: geoff, i see you went back to the inspiron... why give up the desktop for a laptop again?

I've actually had this as my only computer for the past several months, I believe I bought it in February or March from a friend. Because right now I dont really care about upgrading computers, because if I bought a top of the line system, it wont be any different then the one I bought back in November when the 8800 series first came out.

I'm waiting until the popular DX10 games come out, prices drop, and new processors and video cards come out.
