Windows XP won't recognize slave hard drive

After one of my older computers finally died, I suddenly realized there was a lot of information I had to get off the hard drive. So, the most logical course of action seemed to be to insert the old hard IDE hard drive into a newer computer as a slave drive. I set it up and fixed all the jumpers, and since both hard drives were set up with Windows XP, I figured the new computer should recognize the old hard drive.

However, while both my BIOS and Disk Management recognize the hard drive, the hard drive still does not show up in Windows Explorer. The drive has been initialized in Disk Management, but it claims the drive is unallocated, and only gives me the option of making a "new partition." I've tried changing the jumpers and setting the drive up in different configurations, but it still does not allow me to access the drive.

Does anyone know what the problem is? The new hard drive is a Western Digital 1600.

Did you format it? DUHHHH
Also, did you install the CD for the HD DUHH again
And did you insert the HD to correct cable
Try that

Well, considering I need to get data off of the hard drive, formatting it is clearly not an option, DUHHHHH.

I've already checked Hardware Manager and the hard drive is indeed installed.

And, I have it hooked up as a slave to my master hard drive in this new computer. So, it is indeed connected to the proper cable.

I said Format it cuss you said your gonna use it for slave -.-(Dont get meh wrong)
And do you have XP PRO or Home, because Home has this problem commonly(Home is full of glitchs, MS screwed it up bad...)

And Installing proper software might help... such as ALLL Seagate Barracuda HD requires to install software for their HD or it doesn't even work...

have you tried connecting the drive up via usb instead to retrieve the data you want?

Western Digital doesn't provide any drivers for the hard drive, and their Data Lifeguard Tools only wants me to format and partition the drive.

As far as USB goes, I was thinking about that as a viable option, but how would I go about converting the IDE drive to use with USB?
