Okay i know a motherboard has slots to put everything,
so does a good motherboard just have more slots or does it make it run faster
or smoother,

thanks in advance< lee

The motherboard is the main part of the PC which connects everything together.

And the difference from say, a $50 cheapo mobo and a $250 expensive one is more then just the number of slots (which actually isnt that different between the low and high end models).

In expensive motherboards, you will find nicer chipsets which boost memory performance with higher end memory controllers (Intel's), higher quality capacitors, have higher quality and thicker PCB's to allow for cleaner signals and more efficient power handling, improved overclocking, options for SLI/CF, a broader range of supported processors, and alot more.

Think of it as the vascular and nervous system of the body, alone all the organs in the body would be pretty useless, but joined together by the nervous system they are able to run :D

Can't forget the fact that depending on the model you buy determines your chipset (AMD/Intel), the speeds at which your RAM and your CPU run, and of course the type of hardware you can attach to it.

Jimmymac is right in comparing it to a nervous system, it's the spine of the whole computer.

Remember, quality not quantity. Just because a motherboard has more slots doesn't necessarily mean it's better.
