AMD Athlon64 X2 3600+ Questions

It is my understanding that the processor is a 2.0GHz, which does show up in the system info in the control panel, but when I run CPU-z it shows that I am running at 1004.4 MHz and that the multiplier is x5.0 and FSB is 200.9MHz. Why is this? Thanks in advance!

Ryan

The reason that it only shows up as 1004 mhz is probably because the CPU is not under load and therefore uses speedstep to slow itself down. I myself have a similar processor and the same thing happens. Also for the FSB if you times 5 by 200 you get 1000 mhz which is the speed of AMD Hypertransport. (equivalent of the intel frontside bus).

Cool'n'Quiet has nothing to do with your HyperTransport speed, it just dropped his CPU multiplier down to 5. Your CPU multiplier and your HyperTransport multiplier is two different things!

Dont worry your CPU is fine. Cool and quiet lowers the multiplier to reduce heat and power oconsumption. Try putting your CPU under load and it should operate at the full speed.

Thanks guys! I haven't had a decent desktop in awhile, I didn't even know the desktops were using Cool n' Quiet. I thought that was more in laptops.

My next question is that I hear many have been able to overclock this processor to as much as 3.0GHz. My system is an OEM Acer so I'm not sure if this could even be done with mine. If it is possible, how could it be done? I tried checking in the bios and couldn't find any settings for it.

3.0ghz? Unless you were extremely luck with the stepping, production week and possible even have a water cooling thingy, i don't think you'll hit 3.0.

Expect 2.6 and up.. if you're lucky you may hit 2.8 :)

Hey I'd be happy with 2.5GHz to be honest. That to me sounds like alot. :D

After searching around though it seems some have done as high as 3.0GHz and this guy even went to 3.1.

First things first though, is it even possible with an OEM Acer system? I've only ever overclocked a graphics card, never a CPU, so I'm not sure the best way to do it. I looked over the OC 101 thread and it mentioned Clockgen for OEM systems, but I'm not even sure it would work with Windows Vista and my motherboard.

I would think you could.. i don't think Acer would be as stringent (not to mention greedy) as hp or consumer dells. What type of motherboard you have?

I saw that too after doing a google on my motherboard's model number, but I couldn't find the settings in the Bios for the life of me. Maybe there's somehthing hidden or something I don't know to look for?

This is a long article but i find that it is extremely competent in explaining absolutely everything you need to know about overclocking.. At least in my case.

A lengthy article is exactly what I need. Never a bad thing to know too much. Thanks! :D

I think if you press like Control + F1 or F2 it makes some options appear on few mobos.

With my Gigabyte motherboard i have to press Control + F1 to access memory speeds/dividers, HT link multiplier control, etc. So yeah, you may need to do something similar.

CTRL F1 and F2 didn't work. Any other ideas? I could always use clockgen right?
