What do you think of Compaq/HP/laptop brands?

Yet another person looking for laptop advice. The screen of my VAIO laptop is seriously cracked and the costly repairs convinced me to just get a new one instead.

I really like Sony laptops but they're awfully expensive so looking around, I found some laptops that seem like good deals with great specs. Most of the cheaper ones I found are Compaq laptops, some are HP. I've always had qualms about Compaqs since I don't like the way the hinge on the screen works - my best friend's Compaq screen just suddenly fell down one day and the hinge hasn't worked since. It's also heats up lots. I don't think it's very sturdy. What do you think about this?

Any comments you may have about laptop brands are appreciated.

MY OPINIONS :
HP - no experience with these, I'd really like to know how their performance is.
DELL - the heating issues are enough to make me stay away from this brand (using one now).
LENOVO - the great reviews attract me but I haven't seen this brand being sold here.
TOSHIBA - I somehow trust this brand and it's probably my #2 favorite after Sony. I haven't used one, just my opinion from reading the reviews.

I have a HP Pavilion and it's nice, not the most powerful but it's got a good screen and very slim. The Dell is quite powerful but it's literally as thick as a paving slab. Compaq is HP and vise versa but HP seem to be slightly more expensive, whether there's a quality difference I don't know.

i wouldn't recommend a toshiba laptop. my family bought one a couple years ago for really cheap and my friend bought a more expensive one recently. both of them get terrible battery life and get very hot. our Toshiba overheated twice to the point that the screen turned off and would not turn back on. We bought a more expensive hp a couple months ago and it is at least 57x better. the battery life is amazing and it is much quieter that the toshiba

My hp laptop overheats... badly. 70c idle 85c+ load. 112C video card idle ???C load.

MY dell laptop rocks! yes it may be "thick as a paving slab" but its either a hot hot laptop for me or a heavier laptop that doesnt heat up my desk in 5 mins.

if you buy HP/compaq go buy their business class laptops, same prices better quality machines with out all the crappy software.

i personally own a nc4200 business class HP laptop and its pretty nice.

i currently have a compaq sitting in front of me , and im pleased with it. It runs silent (most of the time) and it doesnt even get that loud when i'm playing NFS Carbon (huge memory hog)

oh, and LENOVO is IBM. They bought them about a year ago i think

I bought a laptop to take with me on the road, play some old games, its a compaq v2000, turion 64, ati graphics. It was $750 after taxes and has worked well for me. Its great for playing Halo.

Well my laptop is a cheap on ($299) at HEB... A Compaq Presario V6000 , AMD Mobile Sempron, Designed for XP, Vista capable, Nvidia graphics,

are there any overheating issues with this laptop?

Good, dont consider toshiba...i have had nothing but trouble out of mine, everything from the battery, heat, and it runs slower than a 80's computer
I like hp and compaq 50/50 so i cant say :)

I have lil to no experience with HP/Compaq Lappy's but i used a IBM (wasn't Lenovo yet) Thinkpad R40 and R42 and I can honestly they those laptops were made of steel. The only issue i ever had was the power adapter dying. At work i have messed around with a few T60 and T60p's and they are also really nice.

My $0.02

I've had my HP laptop since last September and now it's being replaced after 2 months of faffing around with Staples UK and HP. It was a good laptop although I need reliability and I'm not getting it with this...
