heres the setup

my home pc has dsl internet. i bought some WIFI wireless thing for the wii but i guess it works for wireless pc's as well. i have a 2 laptops that each use the wifi thing. is there a way to track internet activity on the wireless laptops using the wifi setup? i looked on the home pc that has the internet and found no history or temp internet files between them but is there a way to find out the wireless internet activity from the home pc? how would this be done?

access to the WIFI Connection is unsecured but still is there a way to see where anyone using the WIFI has visited and stuff like that. im not doing anything "naughty" i just want to know if its possible to trace the sites visited of people using the WIFI_Dongle thing.

Good question, i would like to know that too:confused:
I have wireless and you should really REALLY secure it, very dangerous to have it unsecured anyone can tap in on your connection and download anything illegal and next thing you know you got cops knocking on your door :D

well, if u acess the router, you can see who has accessed the router and the ip's of those computers...

below is a picture of my router

u can see the computers that have ever connected to my network, and if u click on them, you can get info like ip's and mac addresses and other misc. info

I dont think there is a way find out where other PC's went from your home compter, but if you want to make sure you are safe you can filter via MAC addresses. I have my network set up so only PC's I have listed in the router setting can access the internet. So if someone from the outside tries to use my internet they get blocked

I use MAC addresses most of the time for ppl that I set up wireless for, best way possible. But if you can use the WPA key, too. I had a friend, who has a BSD in Networking, he said "you thought you set up those Wireless networks good, eh?" We drove over to the place and sat in my truck, he got his laptop and someway fooled the MAC address to get into the network, don't ask me how.

MAC address spoofing is easy because you can download utilities to do it for you, there is no challenge in that. The best type of security is layered. Your Wii supports WPA encryption, I know because I have a Wii. Set up your wifi router with a secure password, ie change the default router log in, and then slap WPA encryption on it. WPA is not fool proof because humans are dumb, and it is still subject to dictionary attacks. So, don't use common user names and passwords.

If you want to track what clients are doing on your network you will need to set up like a sniffer or something of the like, however you can get into ethical issues right now.

Just setting up MAC address filtering is pretty much pointless. WEP is almost as pointless because it can also be broken with downloadable free utilities.

The best security is layered though. Get a decent router that supports NAT and SPI firewall natively. Then set up decent wifi encryption with a secure password, and you are almost fool proof right there. Not impossible but someone would really have to know what they are doing to get in. I just set up a wifi network for a doctor's office with a 45 alphanumeric WPA2 Enterprise passkey for the wifi access. I'd like to see someone dictionary attack that password!

I don't run any anti virus, any anti spyware or anything on my windows box at home, and I don't get attacked or exploited because of my layered security, and I also don't use P2P apps which are bloated with that crap as well. Most viruses are actually caused by the user using crappy P2P applications which are bloated with viruses, spyware, and malware.

I think I have it going with WPA and using a MAC address now.

tlarkin, great post. not alot of people really know how easy it is to hack into a wireless router, just by sitting in your car. i do it all the time, its called wardriving. look it up. most wifi routers, come with so many security settings by default, but no one usses them. they buy it, come home, hook it up and poof done. you have mac filtertering, WPA2(not wep or wpa, because they are easy to crack), connectiongs filtering, amount of connections that the wifi will open up, not broadcasting SSID (meaning, your wifi wont pick up the ssid, you have to tell the computer that it is out here, but supplying the SSID). now, not all of these are very secure, a good linux based program will, find the "hidden" SSID, will open up more ports, will change the MAC address allowance, and can break WPA and WEP. now if your good, WPA2, but the more security measures you have the better. and if you set up a proxy server on your network, you can tell the router, only to allow ips from certain workgroups or domains, and if you buy a wifi access point, then you can make your portable laptops go through the proxy server, which will then allow you to log everything and see what everyone is doing and going at what time and etc. but thats more money and time.
