Would i see any performance loss by having a S-ATA and an IDE hard drive running on the same system?

No

I think he means to have the IDE HDD as a primary drive then SATA for storage, im guessing anyways.

I would just install the OS on the SATA drive and then use the IDE drive for data storage.

I wouldn't know. I only have XP on both the primary ide and first sata. The seocnd ide sees Vista with the second sata seeing storage. There hasn't been any gains or lags seen between the two XPs here.

you're probably not taxing your system hard enough to notice a difference. Render a file in photo shop and see how much faster windows reads/writes virtual memory to your HD.
