Two harddrives

I have a 250gig Western Digital Hd. I`m attempting to also hook up an 80 gig Western Digital Hd. The 80gig belongs to my daughter who`s pc messed up. I`m attempting to load all her stuff onto my pc if I can get it to recognize her hd. I`ve even disconnected my 250 gig and plugged hers in the identical way mine was, it still won`t recognize it. I went into the bios and there the 80 gig is bigger than daylight, but it won`t boot up. This hd is good and was working fine on her pc until it crashed (motherboard is dead). I`ve tried every combonation according to the manuals, etc. I`ve tried all the master and slave combos available. I know this subject may be kind of vague in description, but that`s it in a nutshell. Anything I might be missing?

It most likely won't boot up in your system because the OS was installed under different hardware (ie: hers), but I don't see why it shouldn't be able to act as a slave to your main drive.

One question I have is what kind of drives are they, IDE or SATA? If they are both IDE then you will need to set jumpers to designate Master and Slave; If they are both SATA, they shouldn't need jumpers at all, and likewise (I believe) if they are mixed, though the IDE may still need to be jumpered.

EDIT: Also if hers is a SATA drive and your is an IDE, your motherboard may not have SATA RAID Drivers installed, which could explain why you see the drive in BIOS, but not in Windows.

Also. just make sure you have the hard drive on different channesl (different ide cables). i dont know if they are not able to go together but i know i have had some problem with it.

Thanks for the replies.
I did it both ways, I had them on the same cable and then I had hers hooked up by itself. I think it`s IDE. I have the 40 pin connectors and the motherboard has IDE connectors.
What is the difference between IDE and SATA?

IDE will be the big fat 40-pins, and SATA is slim and sexy. If you know what IDE looks like, you'll know the difference. If they both take the big 40-pin ribbons they are IDE.

If you have them both on the same ribbon, make sure the Master is on the last connector and the Slave is in the middle, like this:

Both are IDE. I had the Master on the end and the slave on the middle connecter and it still wouldn`t boot up. I`m going to install another motherboard on her pc anyway, if her hd doesn`t boot up on that, I`ll tend to believe her hd is trashed to some degree. Thanks!
