I deleted linux with partition magic and now I cant boot to windows Xp. I dont have a windows disk.when I turn computer on the following appears;

Grub>

Please help me, I havent a clue.I got the computer off my brother and he had linux on it, but I just used XP

i believe if i am correct, the mbr is set to boot into linux boot master (forget name right now) but when you removed it it does not know where to go. if you rembore before you uninstalled it, the boot screen has something like windows and below was like linux. What ever he named the windows boot part put it in with the grub> so. grub> boot windows (or what ever he named it) If that does not work. try something like grub> boot /dev/hda1. If that does not work and it gives you a invaled command just tell me i will try something else.

You will need a Windows disk unless you've manually installed the Recovery Console (you probably haven't) because you need to give Windows back control of the Master Boot Record. Right now it belongs to GRUB, and GRUB ain't finding it's /boot partition.

Once you have a disk (I believe you can borrow one because you are not actually installing Windows with it, and thus it is not illegal ), set your computer to boot from CD (in the BIOS), and follow the on-screen directions to get into Recovery Mode.

Instructions to do this (Choose Start the computer and use the Recovery Console Link)

then run the following commands in order:

FIXMBR
FIXBOOT
BOOTCFG /REBUILD

then reboot. That should have you booting into Windows.

Only FIXBOOT should do the trick.

thaNK you for replies, i'll get an xp disk off someone. would it be possible to connect to another computer by usb and boot it from there, there are other computers in the house with xp, or is that not possible?

actually all you have to do is wipe the boot sector

boot of windows xp cd into recovery console

Code:
fdisk /mbr

done

Have done this myself many times when I load linux on a system at work for testing stuff out and then that system will eventually go to a user, I have to wipe it and image it, but reimaging does not overwrite the boot sector, so I have to kill it manually every time.

okay I have a cd and tried to do that but it asked me which installation of xp i would like to use, and only allowed one letter or one number command, I typed the number -1- and it asked for a password, ??
I don't have any password.
Also I tried a recovery option and it asked for a floppy disk which I dont have either.I should have just left linux on it.

its asking for the administrator password, if you never set one leave it blank and hit enter. You set this feature up during the original windows installation

ive always found that just fixmbr works once youve entered the recovery console, i just type that, exit, and windows replaces grub;)
