sony vayo won't start

one of my friends has this laptop that is a few years old with windows home on it.
the other day we turn it on and all we get is: "operating system not found" on a black screen.
I tried to use the recovery cd's but I get a error message that says something like the hard drive is not there or is not recognize it or something like that...
what should I do?

restart the computer and soon as u hit restart tap the F10 button a few times and it takes u to a menu where u can fix it by running the OS or somthing :) i cant fully remember but i had to do it on my vaio ages ago

That the recovery console... and most likely his hard drive has failed, so that won't work.
 
Most likely IT NEEDS A NEW HARDDRIVE. You did say it's a few years old, not at all unusual for a hard drive to fail after that time.
