Computer Society for Students

I recently received a letter for IEEE Computer Society and they wanted me to join. But I am only 17, so I have them a call about the membership. The person I talked to told me I couldn't get a Student Membership because I was not in college. But then I couldn't be a Professional because I did not have the experience, so I had to be a Associate and still pay the full price.

So I talked to a friend of mine and we decided to create our own Computer Society for Students, from Junior High to College. Membership is Free and right now there are no dues. Once you are in, you have a Life Membership. We have decided to name it the Zenith Computer Society and I have purchaced a domain: http://zenithcomputersociety.org though the hosting provider has not been to reliable with up-time.

I could really use some help with this....and if anyone wants to be a member or create a Chapter that would be awesome! I have been working with a friend from Pittsburgh and we have a Chapter rolling there as well as on in Metro Detroit. We are looking at building some virtual labs for members and creating other resources.

Please post your comments, opinions and ideas. Don't want to post..email me: [email protected] I have a Membership form here: http://planetxforms.com/pxf.php?i=BB4270D4&v=B4F0&h=1&a=draw

What do you guys think?

I checked the form Cleric7x9, and it had validation in place...but the validation was messed up. The Membership form is now Fixed!

Right now I need help with creating local Chapters, promoting this society and getting as many people to become members as possible. Once that is running pretty good, I will need help with a Newsletter, Communication with local Chapters, General Management of the Society, Finding Resources (or creating resources) and Organizing online Events (like webcasts or something..but events come a bit later)

Thanks for your help!

A Chapter would be a local branch of the society for local interaction....like for example someone could create a local chapter for their High School or College and then do their own activities as well as offer the national societies activities to their local members.

I have created the first virtual lab, available on the Members Only Section of the website. This lab is titled "Setting a Static IP Address" and allows the user to click through a "Virtual Computer Control Panel" and set the Static IP Address. For the first one it is a computer program that has screenshots of the XP Control Panel that have been linked and connected together.

Alright, I've signed up.

What computer fields will you include... I'd actually be interested in spending some of my spare time creating some "more advanced" Virtual Labs (If you don't mind...). I'm planning on getting my own ASP.Net hosting soon (perhaps I could host them myself, because I don't deal with PHP), and could probably whip up some language-based labs... perhaps basic HTML, or something a bit more advanced (Javascript, C#, VB, ASP.Net). I might be 14, but I tend to know what I'm talking about when it comes to this stuff.

EDIT: sign up works with the form if you go through the main website not the form link given in post :P i signed up though :)

Computer Fields for the "Virtual Labs" and Online Tutorials will be covering basic to whatever programming, basics of IT, ect.

Regarding the computer fields in focus of the Computer Society.....almost everything!

so, do you create them, or do the members?

Ok, I think I have fixed the form. It should work now.

Hey man, you should create some, I am sure he would put them up. What sort of labs are you considering?
Actually, I've started an almost "copy" of what he has created, but I'm including all aspects of the Control Panel (that's it for now)... making it more "realistic" in the process. It will be a basic framework that can be used to simulate the entire control panel, and will use a series of numbers for the scenario... like "15-1-6-8-3" could be code for
15 - Network Connections
1 - First Connection
6 - Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"
8 - Properties Button
3 - "Obtain the following IP" radio button

You get the point... I'll probably create a wizard to create scenarios too... :D

Then it will be possible to create tons of them.

So far, I've gotten the main window pretty close... I'll change the icon later. Link

(I'll get rid of the "Static IP" thing later.)

I do, in addition to the Control Panel stuff, I also want to make a "Switch your start button's text" for XP users... (not many people know how... and I think it is cool to do).

After my Control Panel version, I might create a Registry version.

i like the idea of the start button text tutorial. it even says that the techlabs are created by members, so if you have any friends that want to create labs too you should get them involved. looks great so far

if you are willing to spend some time creating virtual labs and you don't have any viruses, spyware or malware, and its Free then I would love to put it on the website or like to the file on your website.

I would have made the first Virtual Lab a whole lot better, but I had about 10 minutes to do the first one. Also, I would like to incorporate video tutorials so that people can learn about it, then try it out for themselves.

Oh..one thing rbxslvr. Did you decompile the StaticIP Virtual Lab EXE?

nope... I don't know how... I took MS paint, screen shot-ed it and cut down the blue sides, and set that as the background of the form... then I put buttons over the button pics and sized the form. (I cheated:D:cool:... but who cares?... I couldn't get the buttons the same style though).

I'll work more on it tomorrow

I guess I should have asked permission, but I figured since it was for ZCS, you wouldn't mind too much... actually, would you mind if I "Overhauled" the look? I'd like to make the logos and stuff blend with the background of the form (and make it look more "modern"), as well as give the user more control in the simulation.

Not to be picky... but your simulation works no matter what you type in at the end...
