Upgrade an Existing Computer

I have a Dell Dimension 4400.

Can I upgrade the processor?

If so, do I upgrade the motherboard and the processor (anything else) or just the processor?

Anybody's help is most appreciated.

use CPUz... there is more info you need to know. Like what socket

I used PC Wizard 2007 and got the following specs for the mainboard upgradeability.

Socket/Slot : J1E1
Upgrade interface : ZIF Socket
Supported Speed : 2000 MHz (or more)
Supported Voltage : 3.0V

:)

Buy a new one no point in upgrading it, build it yourself so it can be more future proof than just buying it from some prebuilt site

if its socket 478 you can buy a 3ghz proc, and if its agp8x maybe upgrade you GPU, and more DDR, I bet its FSB 400mhz.

Here are some specs I found on the 4400

Try running CPUz to get some processor information

According to those specs, it's 400 mhz FSB which is useless in today's world. Lower end processors are double that now a days. It's going to cost atleast $300 to upgrade the cpu and mobo because your going to need to get an OS cd(assuming you don't have a full version one)

you cant say its useless, the primary role of pc is not for gaming you know, unlike you most people use computer for printing doc & spreadsheets which dont have to be more than 400mhz of FSB.

I was thinking about building a computer, but I have no experience in doing that.

If I do build one, could I use the my existing hard drive and use it in the built computer to run the operating system?

Yeah, I don't use this computer for gaming. It's for searching the web and using word processing. However, the computer seems slow to me when it is on the web and I think it could be faster.
