Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum and I have a question. I'm sure this question has been asked a million times, but here it is:

Do you really need to upgrade to Windows Vista?

I've heard mixed opinions: If your happy with XP your fine, don't upgrade unless your buying a new computer, or just don't upgrade at all. But what do some of you guys (or girls) think?

Well first of if you're a gamer and you have directx 10 compatable hardware you probably should as windows xp only supports DX9. So in that situation you're missing the full potential of your hardware, but then again i don't really know of any directx 10 games off the top of my head. But down the road you'll need vista to run them. Second off, eventually microsoft will stop supporting windows xp all together just like they did with win 98 which means no more security patches and such. If you're happy with xp and aren't really into games there isn't really enough to justify the upgrade in my opinion. Personally, i'm going to wait until the first service pack before i even think about buying it. That will give them some time to get the kinks worked out.

XP Home and Pro will be supported by M$ until March 2014, so I have no problem staying with it. Even if I need a to buy or build a new PC, I'll more than likely put my copy of XP on it, because I'm not a huge gamer at all.

yea i agree most people really dont have a need or reason to upgrade to vista now. i mean vista isnt only expensive but it also is a resource hog. i am currently runing it on my video editing rig only because i recently upgraded it and thought i would give it a shot. i have to say i dont notice a difference in the speed of the os itself, but i do notice a huge difference in the speed that my editing software works. i use adobe production suite and i have noticed that premiere pro and after effects take about half as long to load projects and render as it did when i was running xp pro on the same system. i dont do alot of gaming but i def agree that in the future there will be advantages for gamers who use vista as well. also just because microsoft is going to continue to support xp until 2014 doesnt mean that other software companies will. so for instance if you want to upgrade your anti virus or office programs after a while newer versions of these apps may stop supporting xp all together. i usually am a huge believer in letting ms work the bugs out of its new operating systems, but this time i had the oppurtunity to try it for nothing so i gave it a shot. i didnt like it at first but now im noticing some serious performance increases in many areas with my new system. my word is this. dont go out and drop alot of money on vista just to say you have it. if youre current pc is runin fine and you are happy with it then dont bother because chances are the software will require a hardware upgrade which may not be necessary. but if you have a newer dual core setup and do gaming or media production then i say give it a go if you got the money to drop or resources to get it.

Nope, you don't even NEED to run Windows....

It's mostly just hype from people who already have it and are trying to pressure you into getting it as well. After all it's the latest MS OS, so you MUST need it.

i really don't need to upgrade to vista. i used xp for a long time but about a month ago i upgraded to much better system... linux (kubuntu) and i hope I will never need to go to windows again :D

yeah, but how do you go about playing games on such an os, or do you not play games? thats the barrier i could never get passed when thinking about changing to linux. most freeware aps that you download and games won't run on it right?

i don't play games... and with software i have no problem... i already have all i need... webbrowser, instant messenger, multimedia player, and some text editors for programming... that's all i need

ah, see i'm always looking for cool new freeware aps, not to mention i have a good selection of games that i play. thats probably why i won't part with windows any time soon.

Depends what games you play, I play UT2004 every day. You don't need any 3rd party apps to get it to run, it has a Linux installer on the DVD.

As for freeware apps not running... 99% (guestimate) of Linux apps are free.

hmmm, i see your point, but i'd guess that there are fewer available based on the popularity of one vs. the other. The nice thing is that these days altrinate operating systems are actually going more mainstream. A few years ago, even though i don't like mac, i think it's good for microsoft to have some competition.

wait , i think u should convert to Vista, nothing bad about it, just need a strong enough computer preferably built by urself, but sooner or later, theyre going to stop updates for XP, i think vista is one of the best things to happen really, nothing bad about it :D

yeah, but the fact of the matter is, you can still get updates for it, so why not wait until the first service pack is released. Not to mention if you wait that long there will be more program support for it by that time.

I have XP an Im fine. But if im going to play games like Halo 2, etc... Which only use DX10 drivers, then I might go to Vista. But for right now, Im fine with Windows XP Pro SP2. It is almost like you have to upgrade because one, all of the new computers in Circuit City, Best Buy, CompUSA, etc. have Windows Vista OEM software on it. Two they make alot the new games with DX10, only supported by Vista. (Not XP) Same with alot of the Graphics Cards. On a side note, Doesn't Vista look alot like Mac OS?

I recently switched to Vista out of curiosity and because I got it free. I must say that I was quite surprised how much I liked it after hearing all of the bad reviews. The install wasn't bad at all and after getting all of my programs installed, which all worked fine with Vista, I do not plan on returning to XP.

I guess it's just a matter of personal preference but I do recommend Vista. However, XP is still a fine OS and if you're happy with it, don't leave. Vista is just something new with a lot of "unknowns" right now so that may be a good reason to wait on it. Good luck in whatever you decide!

UPDAGRADE TO VISTA ? NO
ok so if you're a gamer like others mention yes, get ready to buy serious hardware.
take me for example, am no gamer at all so i stick with Xp and my Mac.i'll upgrade later , much later .
my Dell is vista capable but i use xp for more performance
