I wish Microsoft would 'rebox' mechwarrior.. but thats not gonna happen yet I gues. and yea, the game industry IS quite boring. I mean, true, a load of games are good.. but how many are exacly.. well, something new/revolutionairy. (and with that I mean gameplay wise, not grafic's wise ofc )
you know I am not for certain but I think they republished it as open source. At least they did with mech commander

Well, I could only find a link for mech commander...
However, the article is right. I have been gaming since about 1984 (do the math) and I can tell you there is nothing new under the sun. There have been some revolutions. The original wolfenstein and DOOMII of course, then there was the fallout games, which in my mind have never been matched at all over the past decade. There are your arcade classics (donkey kong, pacman, asteroids, galaga, etc), then there are the rehashes.
I haven't played too many FPS in the last couple of years that I play through more than once. Deus Ex had a cool twist to it, Half life was freaking amazing when it came out, but other than that I feel that I have played them all before.
I mean I pick up a Madden football video game (current) and I have to put my players through training to level them up? WTF? Whatever happened to just playing the game? I realize that a lot of this type of stuff is very cool, but I think game designers are losing a great aspect of gaming. The experience.
All of you younger gamers, go out and buy the fallout games. They are dated as far as graphics go but there is no other game that can match it. Its a post apocalyptic turn based strategy RPG that has everything in it. humor, challenge, strategy, building your character, freedom of choices (you can be good or bad, or amoral) etc. Its targeting system was awesome. You can shoot people in the groin (one of my favorite things to do). the inside jokes and humor reflect our own pop culture. In fallout 2 you meet a guy named the "bridge keeper" who is very much like the bridge keeper from Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail. Seriously, Interplay did this game right. Its about game play, experience, and entertainment. Its not just cutting edge graphics and the same recycled crap over and over again

All of you go buy this set. its 20 bucks for 3 kick ass games
In all honesty the last great game I have played for a console in the post 2000 era is RE4, for the GC, and now I own it on my Wii. Awesome game.
The last great PC game I played was HL2 (Counter-strike is so boring, I can only play the gun game mod these days, plus no one wants to play as a team). Doom 3 wasn't all that great, UT has been the same since the begining of time, Halo was so so, FEAR was short I beat it and was like - thats it? FarCry was totally awesome, loved that game.
MMORPGs are all the same recycled crap over and over again too. Click on this thing 100 times and stand there, or just heal, or whatever.
RTS games - you now have characters that level up? Whatever happened to just building your base troops up and destroying your enemy? I remember I timed it once. On the fastest setting in Star craft I could have zealots in your base attacking you in just about 1 minute.
I think they try to jam too many features into game and they don't realize that gameplay is really the best factor for a video game.
