Does any one have an idea? or know about this? Im looking hard for new job,Im thinking about going into the computer world,OR music.

Im wondering do you have to know about everything there is to know about computers to land a job working with them?

Thanks
Chris

By computer job do you mean technician?

In which case they will look for IT based qualifications and experience. If you managed to get to interview you will more than likely have some kind of written or verbal technical test to gauge your knowledge and a practical test either building a pc from scratch or fault finding on a non working machine. Technicians also provide support, so having technical support experience is usually advisable.

Man,a friend of mine got a job at Apple Computers he did not go to school, simply self taught. He told me he used Google.com for all his teachings he also told me schooling is for Suckers. So apperently you dont have to have IT backing you up.

I would really like to be a tech but,I have no experience as jobs go. I have fixed many computers and built my own computer. But How do I prove that other than telling them how its all done step by step.
So Should I get a job at best buy or Circuit City or CompUSA? for starters? or would they not hire some one that has not had a job in the field be for?

Are there any suggestions of what would be a good start off tech job would be?

with any type of job thats in the IT industry u have to have qualifications.. even if its not expected remember ur not the only one going for the job:)

Qualifications aren't required for most IT jobs, but they certainly do help. Yeah it's just a stupid piece of paper, but it says you know what you are doing. That, plus any verbal or hands on test you may get will prove that you know what you are doing. A+ cert. for example is the most basic cert you can get, which covers hardware and operating systems. So basically if you get your A+ cert then it basically shows an employer that you know what you are doing in theory, they just want to see you do it, not just describe it.

Your friend got lucky with his job... hes probably very smart and knows a lot about computers to land a job with Apple w/o any certs or schooling, either that or hes just lying.

very true , no need for qualifications , but if you can get the job done right or you really know what you're doing.
I didn't have any certs when i applied for the support job but i got it and from there i started doing the courses

"Qualifications aren't required for most IT jobs" u seriouse?? EVERY job i have seen for a decent role in an IT career need heaps of qualifications! how else would they know ur understanding of computers?.. unfortunately u cant just sit down and show them ur skills u have to be able to show it in a clear plastic sleeve.. either that or u have to know somebody..

yeah i agree...they would ask what sort of qualifications you have and for example if you say none computer related then you would get the good old....Yes come for an interview,Then you go,Ok we will let all applicants know by the end of the week.

and do they? NO:rolleyes:

Seriusly though the amount of qualifications you need for some jobs today is rediculas.

And sometimes when you have got the qualifications you still cant get a job in computer work

if the interview looks at two resumes one with certification and one without which one would he/she choose?

obviusly the one with,But thats not always the case.

some employers prefer experience over qualifications, and they train you up anyway:)

What exactly is an "A+ Certification"? Where does someone get one? Is it an in or out of college thing?

(I know I can't get one.... yet. Just curious)

well when i said that i was refering to me, i had only 1 certificate which was A+ Hardware, nothing else, but the job wanted more, but i passed anyways

IT jobs depend on where you live too. I have been out of school for 3 months and i'm still an intern becuase i'm just waiting to find a job around where i live there are not many openings at all! Start going out to larger companies and such around your area or dice.com and looking for your jobs you are interested in.

Well, that's why I said they arent required. Having a cert will definitely increase the chances of getting a job, but I know people who have landed help desk jobs with just an A+ cert, and another friend of mine doesn't have any. In fact, his job paid for him to get the certifications. In his interview he proved he knows what he's doing because he has years of experience. Obviously it helps to have, and it increases your chances of getting the job, but it is not mandatory. You should look around at more companies if every job youve seen you need "heaps" of qualifications.

Plus, having the certs doesn't mean you know how to actually do it. A colleague of mine, who sits right in front of me, went to school where our former network admin. taught, and he knows his stuff. He can explain everything perfectly, in fact, he aced his oral test part of the interview, but he cant execute a thing. This is where I come in. I have no certs, but I know what I'm doing when I'm in front of a computer. When a problem arises, he doesn't know how to physically fix the problem, but verbally. He explains to me what the problem is, and the basics of how to fix it, and I go fix it. My point is, certs are just a piece of paper that says you know what you are doing, doesn't necessarily mean you DO know what you are doing. Experience is very important. Certs get you started, but experience takes you much further than any piece of paper can.

an employee will choose someone with a cert & experiance over someone who does not have any of these.

One thing with the computer industry, Experiace is worth a lot! If you have just graduated, i would recommend taking any computer replated job you can get your hands on just for the experiance then look for the job you really want further down the line.
