im getting ready to get vista for my laptop in about a month or two but first i need to buy a few upgrades. So until that happens i want to try ubuntu on my laptop. so i went to the site downlaoded it. burned it to a cd. but whenever i say boot from cd nothing happends and windows just loads up regularly. so my question is. how do i istall ubuntu??

you might try a dual boot with XP and linux. first you want to partition your hard drive, then install it on the new partition. i did this with XP and vista, and, you may want to do the same with yours.
seriously, consider trying to preserve XP, because i find it very useful when trying to get the most out of my graphics card in games.

have you changed the boot path to cd drive in your bios yet? it would be a common mistake

oops didnt see where you clarified that... hmm... try deleting your copy of windows, (i would backup all your important data into a flash drive) or maybe walk us through what you did to make it boot from the cd

i downloaded the free deep burner. is that good enough?? if it is how do i burn from it where i can boot up from the disc. can you guide me through it??

i wouldnt erase your copy of xp, i dont think thats the problem. Your best bet would be, as mentioned, a dual boot. The process is really simple. You just have to DL the iso from ubuntu, which im assuming you did. Then you have to burn it to an iso. I use burnon CD&dvd
. then you just boot from the Cd. The live desktop will come up and you can either mess around with the os or install it. Like i said, if you booted from the CD and it did nothing, it was probably not a good burn. If you need help walking through the burn, let me know.

Yeah, don't delete your xp copy just in case you don't like ubuntu or for some other reason. Make sure it is an iso and MB is set to boot to cd rom. If you would rather get a cd mailed to you, they offer free cds through ship-it. It takes a few weeks, but if you have the time that might be easier.
