Arctic Silver 5

Hi,

I'm probably going to get some Arctic Silver 5 paste, what will it actually do, is it as great as people say it is?

It's £4 ($8) and I don't want to spend that money for nothing, worth it?

I idle @ 32c and load @ 46c.
Thanks :)

Yeah it's worth it as at the moment your fans is being beaten by my fan, although it is on full constant and got Speeze applied. As Kof said it'll last very long.

temp changes can be around a couple of degrees or so but dont expect miracles. Its good stuff no doubt and the advantage is that you get enough to do loads more systems after if you upgrade the processor at some point

most people notice a couple degrees cooler, but there are other advantages. it is easy to spread, it doesnt harden up after months of use, it is easy to clean, you get quite it a bit in the tube, and unlike most no-name brands, it wont stain silicon

Yes but northbrigde coolers are a pain and there's already stuff on them that's even more of a pain to clean off. I didn't notice any difference going to AS5 from the stock intel paste. If anything it went up a degree or two.

There's mixed views on this, I thought it'd be a sin not to have it on your CPU :P I don't know, seems like a lot of money for something I may not even notice.

It's all in who you talk to, some people swear by the stuff claiming insane temperature drops after using it. I've never noticed a difference.

Yeah, I see what you mean, It's strange that you didn't notice any, after it's supposed to be great.

The reason I'm looking into getting it is because I idle, when I turn my PC on and it's @ 32c then after using the internet and stuff, it's like 37c, with is a bit stupid. Then when you leave it, it goes down to about 34 - 35 c

32C is ambient temperature of your house, and seeing as your processor is a heat source, it will most definitely be warmer than room temperature (unless you're using an active heat pump) even under minimal use. Your temps are nothing to worry about, and AS5 wont help against physics.

What do you mean it's being beaten?

What do you think my temps would be if I got some?

My fan seems to be reporting cooler temps than yours, bizarre I know... Does your fan start up when you switch the PC on? Or does it take a while to start spinning?

Ah right, I see what you mean, It starts to spin when it enters the boot sequence. I've ordered some AC5, a fan duct and some cable sleeving, so I'll see how it goes :)

depending on the mobo some are easier to add AS5 to the NB AND SB. especially if you plan on overclocking i would put some on them as well.

Dont expect much of a difference between stock and AS5, from reviews I've read you will most likely only notice a difference of 2-4C.
