Looking for a Linux OS

Ok, where can i find a good linux for free, that i can burn to a cd and boot up a new pc that i built with a blank HD in it?

after looking, ive narrowed it down to Ubuntu and Solaris 10, what are the pros and cons to these? are they any good?

I can't comment any further as you have come across ubuntu, half of this forum will come down on this thread for you to use ubuntu, i have never seen or tested solaris but i want to...

I've used Solaris Express Developers Edition 5.07 (long winded!) and it's good when you get used to it but Ubuntu has better inter-operability.

lol, so ubuntu it is, if half of everyone will tell me to us it.... anyways, is it like a permanent desktop, or is it a "live cd" i would rather install it to my harddrive, so how would i do that?

yeah it's live just click the install icon to start the process of putting it on your hard drive permanently

ok, but how do boot it to a blank pc? it say on the disc that theres no bootable cd when i put it in........

I'm not recommending distros anymore, it seems to be a sensitive subject these days.

Just pick one and try it, if you don't like it or have hardware issues with it, then pick another and try it.

You need to burn it as a CD image (ISO image) else it won't be bootable.

ok, i guess i figured it out, i didnt burn it as an image..... so i did what the ubuntu site says and downloaded infrarecorder and burnt it as an image this time.... i hope it works.

i think i downloaded the wrong version, i picked the alternate desktop one, and i think that wasnt the right one. im downloading the standard one now, and ill set the cd rom to boot first after i get this on a cd..... i hope it works this time, this is getting aggervating

well, im starting to get aggervated now, its still not booting up ubuntu, could it be where i deleted windows off the hd? cuz when it boots regular, it says windows could be launched or something like that.... but then i restart it, hit f11 to go to the boot menu, and its like my cd drive isnt reading the cd.... i dont know whats wrong.

it sounds like you havnt burnt the cd properly as a bootable image.

I always use Nero to burn my ISO images and it works everytime.

as for the windows error...you do have a xp disk OR a recovery disk to install windows again i hope?
just incase you need to re-install windows?

sometimes i wish i could just jump through my pc to help people :)

nope, no windows reinstal, because my mom payed some electrician to instal it when he fixed it a while back.... no windows cd, and its not even an authentic serial key.... so thats why i need linux.... here the deal. i have 2 hard drives. 1 with windows, but its not running because of the hardware changes i made when i built my pc... the other was a windows 98 but i cleared the hard drive wanting to put ubuntu on it.... well, its still acting like it has windows 98 on it when i go to boot it up, and says the files cant be located.... now, i want to boot linux on that hard drive, so i can keep my data on the other one for later....... what do i do next?
