win ME to win XP transition probs

I've had a windows ME and i put XP onto it, now that I put the recovery disks in to the computer to reformat, and get things back the computer doesn't reconize itself as an HP computer anymore. So the disks wont work because they only do for HP computers. is there a way to get my computer to reconize itself as an HP again? nothing has changed except the operating system on the same harddrive...
advice?
thanks.

First you need a Welcome to the Computer Forum! http://www.computerforum.com/70672-official-welcome-thread.html and a quick reminder given to new members to review the http://www.computerforum.com/52038-forum-rules.html

If the primary was changed/converted to NTFS the Fat32 based recovery disks wouldn't work for reformatting there. The ME installer can't go against the newer version of Windows namely XP which seems to be the main problem. The two page article seen at the link here explains how to tell if you are running XP on the original Fat32 primary as well as what to do if you had somehow saw the original changed to the NTFS file system. The first page explains this at http://www.cyberwalker.net/faqs/reinstall-reformat-winxp/wipe-winxp-revert-older-windows.html

For a quick look at the assumed upgrade to XP while remaining on Fat32 go to http://www.cyberwalker.net/columns/feb04/reformat-FAT32.html These pages will provide the step by step method where hopefully you can still use the system recovery process if the hidden portion with archived files and drivers is still intact.

i thought the bios stored the info. i never ran into this problem ith all the recovery cd's i have had

What are you trying to do, it had ME you upgraded to XP and your trying to use the recovery disks that came with the computer with ME, if thats the case it wont work. Are you wanting to go back to ME?

I'm surprised you are not planning to stay with the newer version of Windows since the main bugs have already been worked out on the faster more stable OS. NTFS is superior in many ways to the old Fat32. The bulk of softwares seen ate 2000/XP orientated for the most part over the years with newer programs coming out being Vista ready. Support for ME at this time is almost none existant as well.
